David McLachlan 2017 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

It’s been just about a year since the formal release of a benchmark album by songwriter David McLachlan, whose Traveling Truthfully disc, as we described it the month before its formal unveiling at last year’s Winterfolk festival, marks an evolution into the Country genre from his roots in Folk.

Of course he continues to write new material and you could always catch up with him to see what he might be sharing these days at this coming weekend’s 16th edition of the Winterfolk festival, where he makes two appearances on Sunday.  But of course you’ll need to get yourself a wristband to do that —which is actually quite a bargain at just $20 to see almost any show involving over 100 artists that are on offer over the weekend.

But if you want to have a listen to his material without paying a cover charge —and in an environment where you can actually ask him some questions about his interesting musical journey— you’ll want to check out tonight’ edition of the weekly ABC Songwriters Circle hosted at Amsterdam Bicycle Club by Robert Pelletier of Felix & The Cats.

As I related last month, the series in the comfy room at 54 The Esplanade near Church St. is not just about hearing tunes by three featured guest songwriters plus the host.  It’s also an opportunity to get to know more about them and their music through the talk-show style conversations Pelletier sparks up between songs, and also actually offers opportunities for audience members to ask questions of the performers.

You might ask David about how his musical journey evolved over the past 15 years from his debut 2003 disc that had echoes of Gordon Lightfoot through two albums in the past three years that have displayed a more radio-ready rustic rowdiness mixed in with the enchanting guitar work for which he’s rightly respected by his peers as well as fans.

I’m surprised, frankly, that there’s not more Country represented at Winterfolk, since to my mind the two streams seem to flow from the same pool of authentic “real folks” story song experience at their root.  No doubt David has some particularly interesting insights into how they’re intertwined.

While you’re there you may also discover other talents that impress you, including the engaging lyrics of the host and/or the other two guests (with whom I’m unfortunately completely unfamiliar) Andre Dantas and G3NERIC (what/who-ever that is).  It kicks off at 9 and runs till around midnight and prices here are surprisingly reasonable given the toney neighbhourhood in which the place is located.
