Album cover for John MacLeod's 'The Toronto Sound'

Album cover for John MacLeod’s ‘The Toronto Sound’

There are many ideas as to what constitutes “The Toronto Sound,” foremost among them perhaps the music of the R&B and Rock/Blues bands that emerged from the twin crucibles of Yorkville and Yonge Street in the 1960s.

But Jazz coronet player John MacLeod apparently has his own concept of what the phrase connotes, since tonight he and his band The Rex Hotel Orchestra are releasing an album under that name in the dining room at the swank Old Mill Inn at 21 Old Mill Road just west of the Humber River.

The timing couldn’t be better, since today is actually “World Saxophone Day” according to the DaysoftheYear.com website.  And you can bet there’ll be plenty of sax among the instruments in MacLeod’s gigantic 20-piece orchestra performing 8 p.m. till 11:45.

The disc is being billed by show sponsors Jazz.FM91 as a tribute “to Toronto’s leadership in big band jazz around the world” and selections from the album and other tunes will be performed by the ensemble that includes many local acclaimed veteran performers.

There is a cover charge, of course, but I wasn’t able to find out just how much from the Jazz.FM website or its tickets link —but don’t expect it to be cheap.  Then again, however much they charge, for this calibre of entertainment and the size of the group, whatever it is it’s probably a bargain if you lean towards this style of music.

If you do like this style of performance and the preceding has whet your appetite insatiably but your pocketbook or transportation limitations won’t allow the excursion to the Mill, there is another pretty accessible alternative.  The Advocats Big Band will be performing its second last Monday show at soon-to-close Whistler’s Grille (995 Broadview Ave. at Mortimer) starting at 7 p.m. and the cover there is just $10.
