A dozen years of Moonshine keeps Oakville music lovers high | TorontoMoon.ca 180112Fr | Shows for Friday, January 12, 2022

Alfie Smith in concert -BILL WATSON, Facebook

\ OAKVILLE \

I’ve been writing about the annual anniversaries of the Moonshine Café in Oakville for the past several years now, most recently for its milestone tenth back on January 7 in 2016.  Although I’ve only actually visited the room a couple of times, both visits were more than satisfactory in terms of not only the talent presented and the very dedicated attention paid to the sound by owner and musician John Marlatt, but also thanks to the friendly service by staff and John’s partner Jane MacKay.

As I detailed two years ago, the room has been home to some of the GTA’s finest talents representing an astonishingly eclectic range of genres, from intimate Folk through Jazz, Country, Rock, Blues and even Punk and Thrash some nights.  There’s also occasional comedy and spoken word nights and even a fairly regular Sunday “youth jam” at which local kids can show their stuff and develop their chops.

Nestled in the heart of one of Canada’s richest communities (as defined by per capita income) not far from Lake Ontario at 137 Kerr Street, the room is invitingly casual and décor readily testifies to the fact that this is a room dedicated not to shoving gallons of beer down patrons’ throats but to presenting a superb live music experience.  For that reason the small but adequately supplied stage has also been utilized for live recordings on occasion.

Live entertainment happens seven nights a week and usually also afternoons on weekends and as an indicator of the fact that this room actually takes seriously and respects the artists who perform there, it maintains an always up-to-date website calendar listing that also includes fly-out descriptions of what sort of talent to expect.  (I do find it kind of sad, though, that this last point is actually a stand-out feature worth mentioning, since in my ideal universe no one would present live music without having that in place.)

Tonight’s festive celebration is headlined by Hamilton Blues tyro Alfie Smith and his band. Along with Country/Blues singer/songwriter Ginger St. James and several other artists from The Hammer, he’s a regular feature here and well suited to join the ranks of eminent artists who’ve played the anniversaries, such as Folk icon David Bradstreet —who, as we told you at the time, kicked off the ninth anniversary weekend in 2015.

Cover is just $10 but it’s probably a good idea to call ahead (905-844-2655) to get reservations as it’s not a super-large room and there will be lots of interest locally in being there tonight.  In a town that’s certainly not known as a talent hot-bed, this room stands out as a shining oasis where artists of all stripes can gather, perform, grab a decent burger (the only food available, unless something has changed, prepared on John’s grill, usually positioned out front of the room when it’s open) and know that they are not alone amongst the ticky-tacky houses.

A room in which you can get nourished in more ways than one, for the past twelve years now Moonshine has been giving locals —as well as artists across the GTA who perform here— a boost that’s well worth going out of your way for.
