West Hill Rockers @ Karla’s -SARAH DAMTSIS

\ SCARBOROUGH \

Saturday afternoon jams have long been a popular musical event in nearly every community, but until recently jams on Saturday nights (and Friday nights for that matter) were a rarity because it was assumed that most people who might come to perform would already be engaged doing a gig of their own elsewhere.  Not so much these days.

But Saturday night jams are still pretty rare and are bound to be a hit-and-miss affair due to the tremendous number of showcase presentations and destination events going on all over the place.  Or so you might think.

But in Scarborough the grand-daddy of Saturday night jams (which in this particular universe means it doesn’t have to be that old —more than a year would qualify) is an event at Karla’s Roadhouse in the West Hill area that pretty much every week, regardless of other shows, weather or big sporting events, brings out a steady stream of local players, many of them name talents.

“Grandpa” Tommy Rocker is the man who makes it all happen, as he’s been doing at jams in the room at 4630 Kingston Road for a few years now, off and on.  He originally started up there on Thursdays with his Tommy Rocker Classic Rock Show band hosting back in 2013, shortly after the room opened under its original owner.  But over the next two years it became very spotty, mostly because while the then-owner had started out like gangbusters when he first opened, he soon let things start to slide and became less a less than reliable operator.  Tommy’s show was cancelled, revived, moved to Saturdays, moved back to Thursdays again —in the end it was a bit of a merry-go-round for a while there.

During the various hiatuses, Tommy also staged similar events at other clubs in the area, but while there were definitely some great moments at some of those, things just never felt as “at home” as they do when Tommy is in the room that he basically put on the map and where he seems at his most naturally gregarious, wild and delightful.

Now at Karla’s, under a new owner for the past year or so, things have gotten back on track.  With assistant manager/server Sarah Damtsis handling band bookings, the jam, with Tommy’s new band, The West Hill Rockers, returned a year ago this week and has since carved out a strong niche on the local scene.  Tommy’s schtick is over the top sometimes, but this enthusiastic, sincere, welcoming host —and dynamic singer who can fill out any rough spots by doing a tune or two with his house band of veteran players— knows how to involve people and how to create a larger-than-life party atmosphere..

Karla's January 2018Speaking of the house band, the three players in WHR backing Tommy are all accomplished veterans who have a wide repertoire of material at their command.  Guitarist John Robbie may be one of the most unsung accomplished six-string slingers in the area and also does very effective promotion for the group.  JD Bass, playing what the name would suggest, and Niall Mellors on the kit team up to hold down the bottom end.  These three players deserve extra kudos for keeping things rolling over a period of several months from the summer into the fall when Tommy was actually absent from the gig as he engineered a residence move and started doing some studio recording.  Using a variety of special guest singers, WHR kept the place hopping and set the stage for Tommy’s triumphant return this winter and since that there’s been no looking back.

Building on the success of the Saturdays, Fridays have become reliably solid as well, and Sarah has also been putting real effort into promoting the place so that people know who’s appearing Fridays and are reminded about the Saturday jam.  Tonight should be a special edition because it marks a year since the event returned to its original home —this time, it would appear, to stay.

It all gets underway at 9 p.m., there’s no cover or minimum and all types of music and talent levels are welcome to take part.

The roadster-themed room has finally, it seems, started to live up to its initial promise of being a friendly and safe but interesting place for West Hill area residents and those attracted by entertainment to socialize, dance and let loose a bit.  And the weekly Saturday jam there, despite a checkered history in the past, now seems to be poised to take the chequered flag and start doing victory laps.
