Most people these days are aware that music, in addition to its ability to create enjoyment and help smooth social situations, has healing and other beneficial qualities. But as a Mississauga-based R&B/vintage Rock singer is demonstrating, it can also help to create positive changes in the direction of people’s lives.

For the past eight years, and again tonight at the Port Credit Legion, singer Peter Toller has assembled his veteran Little Peter & the Elegants group to perform at a dance that benefits a social support organization known as The Compass.

The Compass is a registered charity that opened in Port Credit in 2002 to address concerns about people experiencing severe economic and social challenges. Today, the organization offers a food market where qualifying customers can shop for no-cost food, provides language and computer training classes, as well as legal support and activities such as life skills workshops. As its name would suggest, The Compass helps to orient people who are facing challenges so they can find more positive directions for their lives.

Toller, a Port Credit insurance agent when he’s not singing, got involved in supporting the organization back in 2007 when he was delivering food donated by his local church to the group. Knowing that it was always needing more funding to do its work one day he had a brainwave idea for putting on a Dance For The Compass event, reasoning that if the dozen churches already supporting the Compass all bought tickets it could make a big difference.

In January 2008, the first Dancing for The Compass night was held upstairs at the Port Credit Legion and was an instant hit that’s now an annual tradition, raising well over $20,000 over the past eight years as almost 2,000 folks have supported the Compass at the events.

Toller says the annual show “is a highlight of the year for the band.”

Some folks attend every year and word-of-mouth advertising always gets new faces checking out the excitement, he says, and the group feels rewarded because “to attract close to 240 people every year is quite an achievement.” dancing forCOMPASS

It’s all possible in large part, of course, because the band is very talented at what they do. As we told you recently, this troupe is a highly proficient veteran combo that’s been together with Peter at the helm for 42 years now. The 8-piece band delivers 50s/60s hits with a focus on vocal harmonies, with five members playing instruments and singing backups for the three lead singers up front. More than just a gig, this band truly puts on a show.

The Port Credit Legion, at 35 Front St. N. next to the Credit River just north of the lake, is a perfect fit for fans who in some cases have been following them for their entire career. The upstairs room where the show take place offers comfortable seating at tables that seat ten people and boasts a large wooden dance floor. It also has a cash bar and there’s even an elevator provided from ground level.

In addition to funds from the sale of tickets for $30 at the door, The Compass also benefits from raffles at the event. Doors open at 7:00pm, the show runs 8 to midnight and a light buffet is served after 9:30 p.m.

For more information you can call Peter at 416-464-8067 or see the group’s website at www.littlepeterandtheelegants.com.
