Another king is gone, but Big Tobacco shows Country is forever | TorontoMoon.ca 170809We | Shows for Wednesday, August 09, 2021

\ TO CENTRAL \

Country music fans across the world will be in mourning today at the passing overnight of Country/Pop songwriting legend Glen Campbell.  But while a king of the genre has passed, there are young musicians today taking up the torch of tears-in-my-beers/my-love-is-forever music, and one group of them this evening will celebrate ten years as a band.

Big Tobacco and The Pickers, which takes the stage tonight at 11 at Horseshoe Tavern following a couple of opening act guests (Jerry Leger and Graham Nicholas) to celebrate the milestone.

Rather than reinvent the wheel by going on at length about this group that delivers authentic old-style County originals (and some covers), let me instead refer you to some recent pieces we published on the occasions of a night when they had two shows going on back in June, the release of their most recent The King Is Gone album two years ago and the issuing of a vinyl version of the disc in May of last year.

No doubt there will be lots of copies of the record in both formats at tonight’s show in the room at 370 Queen St. West along with other releases and commemorative merch you can purchase along with your $10 admission ticket.

Shed a tear today for Glen, by all means, but don’t let the sadness linger too long (after all, he had a pretty good life living till the ripe old age of 81) and if you need help moving on you really couldn’t do any better than to get out to the ‘shoe and kick up your heels to a band which will demonstrate that while Country artists may die, the music will live forever.
