Back from east coast tour, Frank Wilks right at home with Beach gig tonight

Returning from a successful tour of Canada’s eastern provinces, including gigs in coastal towns in Newfoundland, Pop Rock songwriter and “I Am Not Neil Young” playwright Frank Wilks will find himself near the water’s edge again tonight as he brings his Freedom Express band into Lion On The Beach.

Wilks, who grew up in the east-end Beach area of TO, did the four-week maritimes jaunt as part of the Unknown Legends trio along with drummer Benny Sanders and Sebastian Agnello (who was on bass duty for this excursion). That combo is a Neil Young tribute band —a role for which Wilks has been typecast ever since being part of the Buffalo Springfield Revisited band that also contained the late Bruce Palmer of the original BS outfit.

But TO musicos also know Wilks for his own melodic and catchy Pop Rock tunes, which he often throws in when he does FE gigs. No doubt many fans will be hoping for just that when he does the free-admission 10-2 show tonight in the hip club at 1958 Queen St. E. a few blocks east of Woodbine Ave.
