Can video breathe life into the live Soul music stars? | TorontoMoon.ca 171012Th | Shows for Thursday, October 12, 2021

Memphis Mudcat band -courtesy Brian Pulford

\ TO CENTRAL \

Hopefully tonight won’t be the last night that Soul/R&B group Memphis Mudcat (aka The Legendary Mudcat Band) performs in the back room at Imperial Pub at 54 Dundas St. E. virtually across from Yonge-Dundas Square.

The band is shooting some pro-calibre video tonight, but the combo, which features highly regarded veteran Jazz/Soul singer Levi Collins and guitarist Brent Pulford, is getting frustrated at the lack of attendance at the shows, bass player Brian Potts tells me.

Levi Collins of Memphis Mudcat

You’d think that with that kind of location and a talented lineup that also often includes special guests for a no-cover weekly 8-12 show, that success would come pretty easily.

But when the club hides you away in a small room that even Potts’s wife had a hard time  locating behind the front tap room populated by students and downtown posers (not to mention doesn’t bother to do any promotional work —and doesn’t even refer to having any entertainment on its website while maintaining virtually no active social media presence) it’s pretty hard to generate momentum.

Hopefully the video shoot will attract enough interest and generate enough good vibes that the group, which has been given carte blanche for the room and is doing the show more for the love of the music than to supplement their day job incomes, gets a little encouragement to carry on.  That’s where you come in folks!
