Shelley Coopersmith in 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO WEST \

I had no idea until today that veteran violin virtuoso Shelley Coopersmith —whom I’ve seen accompanying a slew of top-shelf Roots-Rock, Folk and Jazz/Blues type artists over many, many years— is also a songwriter!

But apparently that is the case, as wily Roots patriarch Bill Heffernan already knew, based on his promo for this afternoon’s “Song Swap” edition of his weekly Saturday Sessions matinee at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles Ave.

With himself and special guest Olesh Maksymiw also chipping in on guitar and pedal steel respectively, today’s no-cover 5-8 affair will focus on “the songs of Alex Sinclair, Shelley Coopersmith and Bill Heffernan” according to his weekly mailout, with the ad hoc group rendering works by each of the three.

Shelley Coopersmith on mandolin, 2016 -GARY 17

It’s not the first time I’ve been surprised by Coopersmith of late.  The other thing I didn’t know about her until I caught her appearing with Roots-Rocker Chris Staig at Relish for a show last September, was that she also plays mandolin.  (She’s also with Staig later this evening for a show across the street from Gate 403 at The Local Pub starting at 9.)

Whether she uses the eight-string or the fiddle to compose with (she certainly wouldn’t be the only catgut composer of note if she uses the violin —Andrea De Boer (who for some reason is nowadays going under the name Civil Wray) has been writing catchy and deep Pop tunes on the instrument for some time as well.

Perhaps today’s session will shed some light on even more dimensions of Coopersmith’s talents —which is no doubt exactly at least part of what scene builder Heffernan intends.
