Das Fagott Mannschaft @ Relish Sept. 13, 2013 -Gary 17

Das Fagott Mannschaft @ Relish -Gary 17

\ TO EAST \

When four-bassoon instrumental band Das Fagott Mannschaft played at Relish around this time last year, I went to great pains to explain to any not so cunning non-linguists amongst the readership that they weren’t actually a holdover from the PRIDE parade that had taken place the previous day.

Even though PRIDE is now apparently an entire month long —which given the recent events in Orlando and some reactions to it appears, in fact, to actually be necessary to hammer home the message that intolerance is not ok— the really big festivities for that festival don’t start until next week.

And in any case this group, whatever their individual proclivities in love may or may not be, has nothing whatsoever to do with sexy stage antics or erotic cosplay —unless four Classically trained bassoonists pumping out lively Pop and Dance tunes is what gets your fluids running.

For sure however your knees, toes and legs will be stimulated by this quintet (there’s also a female drummer) as it delivers feel-good music that’s highly infectious.  It’s also often quite innovative, with windy and winding solos and harmonies that demonstrate just how versatile this “fagott” (the word for “bassoon” in German and many other languages) can be in the hands of a capable and creative “mannschaft” (the German word for “team”).

So innovative and interesting are these interpretations, in fact, that the group’s short 7-9 show tonight at Relish is actually a part of the Toronto Jazz Festival, which kicks off in full gear today.  The club has a very full slate of TJF shows ahead, actually, including another show tonight, 9:30-12 with The Pearl Motel, a combo that fuses Jazz with Rockabilly and Roots.

The music emporium and tapas eatery, at 2152 Danforth Ave. a block east of Woodbine at Cedarvale, has a total of 21 shows (three each on Saturdays and Sundays) during the festival’s 10-day run up to July 3.  And since I’ve never seen a door charge at this place yet in its ten-year history, I wouldn’t expect one for any for these shows either —although given the limited seating I think they’ll reasonably expect you to spend a few bucks on their great selection of craft beers and other spirits or the results of the Jazz approach the kitchen takes to creation of tapas and desserts.

As for the festival, it has a lot of great acts all over the city in celebration of its 30th anniversary, though most have door charges, sometimes steep ones.  You can pick up the pocket guide at any participating venue or visit their website for more details.
