It’s been just over a year since I wrote about the David Love Band when they were doing a show in Etobicoke, the night they debuted at one of my favourite clubs anywhere in the GTA: Southside Johnny’s.

While acclaimed veteran singer and strummer Love’s power trio, which includes Darrell McNeill on guitar, won’t be back at Southside tonight (that room has another impressive band, Southern Fried, doing Southern Rock) the 60s Pop Rock outfit will be appearing not far away, at Timothy’s Pub at 344 Brown’s Line.

For my money I’d rather see the group at Southside (for one thing, you never pay a cover there, while at Timothy’s these days there is a door charge —presumably necessary because it’s a smaller room) Timothy’s also has its attractions, including a decent stage, pleasant servers, a pretty good selection of draughts on tap and a patio from which you can still catch all the action from inside the pub.

In any case, wherever this group plays quickly becomes a party zone and destination room. With a repertoire that specializes in the days of Pop Rock music’s heyday (obviously I’m talking about the 60s and early 70s) this combo, while only a trio, manages to make all the great hits as well as esoteric cult gems (remember “Crimson and Clover”?) come alive with a feeling of authenticity.

That has attracted a strong following of dedicated fans and proves infectious to others not as familiar with the material as well, with the result —in part also thanks to the spot-on drumming of very versatile skins man Kevin Mulligan— that mass dancing becomes inevitable.

Show starts at 9:30 and I’m pretty sure the cover won’t be more than $5.  While you’re in the area it’s a pretty quick skip around the corner if you want to also check out the fun at Southside. There’s also, of course a big memorial/benefit for drummer Steve Hunt with a lot of great Rock and tribute acts at The Rockpile nearby. So it’ll definitely be worth the drive to this area tonight or sticking around if you’re already there.
