Did a Meteors shower give 60-years-old Tom Noble his superpowers? | TorontoMoon.ca 170715Sa | Shows for Saturday, July 15, 2021

Tom Noble -PAUL CRAWFORD

\ ETOBICOKE \

In the old “Smallville” TV series quite a number of super-heroes and villains other than the Superboy character were said to have received their powers from a meteor shower that hit the town at the same time as little Kal-El’s rocketship landed.

And while it may at first sound like an unlikely prospect, quite possibly the arrival of eclectic R&B/Rock band The Meteors at Timothy’s Pub in the summer of 2002 is what has helped then just-45-years-young coronet player and music super-fan Tom Noble to stay so genial, fit, and still such a chick magnet as he celebrates his 60th birthday at the band’s show tonight.  (As someone already well into my sexy-genarian years, believe me, at our age those definitely qualify as superpowers!)

to-nite #265, July 18-24, 2002, Page 20 excerpt -Meteors hot box

Today’s all-afternoon and evening show is also being billed as the 15th anniversary for The Meteors and it was indeed fifteen years ago, on Saturday, July 13 2002, that The Meteors, who for 13½ years now have been hosting a Saturday afternoon show at the inviting pub at 344 Brown’s Line, first performed there —as the Saturday night feature following the weekly jam that at the time was hosted by the Cottonmouth Blues Band.  Of course my to-nite magazine listed the show, as well as a little featured “hot box” on the band that mentioned the gig along with a couple of others.

(I find it fascinating, btw, to note that of the 33 clubs listed for shows that day, only three remain in existence under the same names and operators.)

to-nite #265, July 18-24, 2002, Page 11 excerpt -Timothy’s 4th anniversary

In the same to-nite #265 issue, interestingly, we also reported that Timothy Brem, owner of the club, was holding the fourth anniversary of its opening throughout the week of July 22-28, as detailed in a full story devoted to the topic.  [Subscribers registered with our website can read that plus see the Meteors hot box and first listing in a post of high-res jpg scans in the Vault section].  That means, of course, that next week marks the 19th anniversary of the club’s opening, though I see no reference to any celebrations on the club’s website.

Today’s party, however, will definitely be a blow-out as the club is going all out to make Tom feel at home by bringing in one of his favourite artists, Jeanine Mackie, along with Maxine Young and several other special guests for a double-bill night with the band.

No doubt Tom, who continues to avidly support and occasionally join in with various acts that appear on the room’s nicely appointed stage, will be among those also sitting in with the band, which will start at 4 pm. and carry on till the wee hours.  There’s no indication as to what the cover charge is but it’s likely just $5.

While you’re in the area, btw (particularly if it gets too packed and you can’t get in) you might want to check out a couple of other shows in a similar genre.  At Southside Johnny’s acclaimed Blues harmonica player and songwriter Howard Willett is the special guest with The Essentials (who were the backup band for The Bear for several years before he passed) for their weekly 4-8 matinée show.  They’ll be followed by sizzling Jenny and The Jets Pop-Rock outfit (not an Elton John tribute!) at 10ish and there’s never a cover for any show at Southside, located at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. West a little east of Brown’s Line.

Over at Blue Goose (off Royal York Road next to Mimico GO station) this afternoon, meanwhile, R&B icons Rob Gusevs and John Fraser Findlay are the special guests with Whitey and The Roulettes (which I believe includes drummer Whitey Glan) for their weekly no-cover 3-6 show.

Only those with super-stamina are likely to be able to make all of these shows but no doubt anyone who gets to any of them, most particularly the double-celebration at Timothy’s, will derive if not a superpower, at least a whole lot of pleasure.  And that can only be something that makes you, like Tom, happier, healthier and a better person all round.
