Essentials in more than just name hit 5-year mark today | TorontoMoon.ca 170422Sa | Shows for Sat. April 22, 2022

Steve Gaetz, Bob Bilton & Adam Battersby are The Essentials -SUPPLIED

\ ETOBICOKE \

It came as a bit of a surprise to me to realize this week, as I prepared to pen a few lines about today’s fifth anniversary of The Essentials trio that does the Saturday afternoon shows at Southside Johnny’s, that it’s already been over two years since the passing of the group’s founder, Buddy “Bear” Armstrong.

I guess that means he didn’t quite make the three-year mark of the event he started there in part based on my recommendation to him and the club, though of course it seemed he’d been there a lot longer.  In fact my history of seeing Bear in the room at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. W. in Etobicoke indeed did go back way further, to long before owner John Theodore rescued what was a somewhat seedy dive and turned it into a respectable neighbourhood eatery and clean, safe bar more than 13 years ago now.

Likewise, the guys in Bear’s band, who never really had a name until towards the end of his tenure —when they took more of a leading role as his health made his participation week to week uncertain— are also all veterans of the area and of the room, which had gone under several names and ownership changes in the years before John came on the scene.

As such, this group is aptly named, since it is these three guys —multi-genre bass titan Bob Bilton, Steve Gaetz on a steady, effective drum kit and super-versatile Adam Battersby on guitar— who are all you really need to have a superb weekly 4-8 show.  They’re all adept at a variety of styles and pacings, they all sing and they are all capable of smoothly adapting to whatever is required of them to please an audience or keep the often fragile egos of lead singers buoyant.

Although guests were a regular feature while Bear was running the show too, since his passing that role has also taken on increasing importance and the list of those who’ve filled it is impressive indeed.  It ranges from sultry chanteuses such as Kat Lovett, Penny Skolski, Robin Banks and Tracey Gallant to veteran band leaders like John Dickie, Donnie Meeker, Kimberley Wetmore, Brooke Blackburn and Chris Partland —and that’s just a very, very short list of some of the awesome talents who have appeared there with this combo.

This week’s guest however, is making his debut as far as I know and it’s another feather in the cap for the host trio.  “It” man and “Stewmeister” Kevin Phillips, about whom I’ve written on a couple of previous occasions, will also be acting as emcee for this special show.

Kevin Phillips -FACEBOOK

Although you can expect Phillips —the frontman for R&B combo The Stew that appears at Mulligan’s Pub in Mississauga Sundays for nearly a decade now— to do a couple of tunes himself, I expect as emcee he’ll be acting more as shepherd for what is bound to be an A-list of superstar cameos by some of the many performers who’ve been part of the show over the past half decade.

To amp that up even another notch, for today’s show the host group will be expanded to four pieces as keyboardist Brad Lovatt (also a Stew member) will be joining the house ensemble.

170314 LIKE TRIVAGO Moon prAfter five years, this host band has become part of the Etobicoke landscape, helping —along with The Meteors at Timothy’s and various acts at Blue Goose Tavern— to keep alive and thriving the venerable tradition of Saturday afternoon live music matinées that first drew my attention to the area more than 20 years ago.

When Bear put this weekly show together he knew he couldn’t do it without a cracker jack band of players behind him.  In order for it to be successful that was, so to speak, essential.  And while he never named this trio, as it hits its five year anniversary this afternoon it clearly has become The Essentials in fact as well as name —not only to the host club but to the local scene around it.
