Sin City Boys in 2015 -Gary 17

\ TO EAST \

I’ve been writing about vintage Pop Rock covers and Tex-Mex style originals band Sin City Boys since becoming a lifelong fan after first hearing them in a small east TO club eight years ago now.  Which makes me, in their quarter-century history, a relative newcomer to the ranks of those who appreciate this dance-friendly, exquisitely dynamic four-piece fronted by singer and guitarist Kevin Jollimore.

Sadly, this article, about their show tonight at Eton House tavern on Danforth Ave. just east of Pape Avenue feels more like an obituary than a celebration —not because anyone has died (although, as we reported previously, the group’s original drummer, Glenn “Bunny” Kimberley did pass away untimely early a couple of years ago and is still remembered by his many fans and fellow players) but because it’s their final performance as a group.

Kevin, who is also, btw, a versatile, much in demand actor and amateur artist (as his personal website details) is moving with his wife to Halifax Nova Scotia this summer “to start a new adventure,” he told me recently.

That will make him the second long-time staple of the entertainment roster at Graffiti’s pub in Kensington Market, where SCB has done a monthly Saturday matinee for several years and where he has also been running a Friday afternoon weekly “kitchen jam” show.  As we told you last weekend, 17-year Sunday afternoon veteran Michael Brennan has announced he’s also relocating back east at some point in the next year.

SCB reaches back to the origins of party Rock for tunes by Buddy Holly, Rolling Stones and many artists of that era, serving up music that gets people dancing and, as I’ve previously mentioned, usually packs rooms like Dakota Tavern (where they celebrated their 20th anniversary what seems like yesterday), Dora Keogh which they jammed with frenzied fun-lovers and dancers and Linsmore Tavern, where I was happily involved in bringing them in for a holiday weekend show expected to be a slow, slow night and which they turned into a banner success that the club booker still talks about to this day.

With Gerard Popma on lead guitar and veterans on the rhythm section backing Jollimore’s by turns growly, frantic, passionate and playful vocals, the band, as its Reverbnation site apty describes it, “has been called ‘Country Thrash’ … and described as sounding like ‘The Rolling Stones in a bad mood.’”

But more than putting on memorable must-go destination live music events, the group also has released a couple of records, most notably in my book so far (I haven’t heard the latest disc but hope to pick one up tonight!) their wonderfully absorbing and lively release Los Muchachos De Pecado (the name of the band in Mexican Spanish).  The album contains a number of tunes like “Temptation Road”, “You’ve Got It Bad”, “Long Way Down” and “Outlaw” which I’ve played many, many times as part of the playlist I spin at shows I put on or emcee.

It was four years ago that I first wrote about the outfit doing their first show at tonight’s Eton House venue at 710 Danforth Ave., and as I noted then, the room is set up perfectly for this band because in addition to its good-sized dance floor in front of the wide stage with pro lights and a house sound man, there’s also plenty of seating —so you don’t have to be cramped in jammed up against other patrons as is the case at Graffiti’s or Dora.

As Kevin’s gift to the combo’s legion of longtime fans, there’s no cover for this evening’s 9:30-1:30 three-set show.  But even with all the room available to spread out at this club, you’ll want to get there early to ensure you have a prime location.

And do bring a few bucks along to pick some of the recorded material —it might be all you’ll have to enjoy of them for some time to come.
