\ TO WEST \

There are a number of charities and initiatives that help to remove obstacles to music-making for young people whose families lack financial resources and for others who face challenges such as folks dwelling in remote communities in the far north.

But Toronto non-profit organization Music Without Barriers is focused on overcoming a different kind of block to performing and composing —that of physical or cognitive impairment.

Judging by the group’s rather cleverly designed logo and its fascinating Facebook page and a MusicWithoutBarriers.com website with even more details, the target group they want to help is those with disabilities such as visual challenges and mobility issues —even including addressing the specific difficulties faced by quadriplegics!

Tonight a group of Humber College music students based around four saxophone players known as the Humber Sax Quartet stages the fourth annual benefit concert to raise funds to further the organization’s goals, including helping those with disabilities to acquire access to technology that can help them express their musicality and working with artists to help them express their musicality and reach their potential.

The show takes place in elegant music listening lounge Burdock at 1184 Bloor St. West a couple of blocks west of Dufferin Street.  Doors open at 7 and donation cover is $15, with the concert starting at 7:30.

If you can’t make the show but want to help the cause, you can also donate online from their website.  And if you’re cash poor but have old musical instruments, components or other equipment you’re not using and are willing to donate, you can also contact the group through the website and they will arrange to pick them up.
