Hoser-in-Chief Mike McKenna -GARY 17

Hoser-in-Chief Mike McKenna -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

Let me make one thing perfectly clear:  I am not, have never been and never shall be a hoser.  So take off eh?

Why any grown man would want to be known as a “hoser” (let alone a woman call herself a “hosette”) is beyond me;  I mean Bob and Doug McKenzie were mildly amusing (in small doses) but I hardly think they were expecting people to emulate their characters.

But apparently there is a whole subculture of folks who regard hoserdom as a badge of pride, the epitome of Canadian character despite (or because?) of traits that many would find rather immature.  As a poem by Arlo Burgon posted on Facebook notes: hosers “stay unemployed, because they don’t give a hoot … The parents basement is where they commonly live / By the time they are 40 they’ve run out of shits to give / Hypnotized by hockey games and way too many beers to drink / This seems to limit their ability to think / They rarely leave the basement, unless they need beers and smokes” and so forth. Yuk!

But despite my antipathy for the name of this evening’s Songtown-sponsored “Hoser Blues Night” at Black Swan, I’ll be there at 154 Danforth Ave. tonight because the fact is that the talent (headliner and hoser-in-chief Mike McKenna and an all-star band with a couple of superb talents guesting) and repertoire (Mainline music including the Stink album along with originals by guests Pete Otis and Pat Little) will be first-rate.

Cover for the 8-12 show —the first of a monthly series that in October also includes special guest Cathy Young— is just $10 and doors open at 7:30.
