Harpin’ Norm has gone from accompanist to smooth band leader |TorontoMoon.ca 170415Sa | Shows for Saturday, April 15, 2022

\ TO CENTRAL \

If you wanted a parable that showed a young musician how hard work, equanimity and talent can pay off when combined together, the story of the rise of Harpin’ Norm Lucien might be ideal.

This affable, unassuming multi-instrumentalist who still loves his harp but increasingly is more valued for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing skills, just a few years ago was a likeable but seemingly unremarkable nobody so far as the broader musical community knew.

Harpin’ Norm Band from album release at Winterfolk 2017 -FACEBOOK

Although back in 2010 when I met him he had already started doing a little jam accompaniment with his harp at events here and there, what really brought him out of his shell seems to have been the advent of the weekly Stir It Up Sundays jams at Relish in east TO, where he lives.

Quite possibly that event is what brought him out of his shell because it turns out it was there that he was inspired to write a song, “Deanna Moves” (and eventually perform it for the first time) about a fellow artist, Deanna Fae, who was also frequenting the event regularly at the time.  Like all of his songs, the tune is catchy, with pithy and clever lyrics and captures deep reservoirs of inner truths.

I first really wrote about Harpin’ Norm seriously in January of 2013 (one of my very first articles on this site after transmorphing Toronto Moon Magazine into TorontoMoon.ca that month) not many moons after hearing what would become one of his signature songs, “The World’s Strongest Man”.  That tune was included on the SongTown Vol. 3: Nashville compilation disc released the previous year by Pete Otis through his SongTown enterprise, just as that initiative was starting to make some serious waves in the music community locally and way beyond.

Harpin’ Norm Lucien @ Winterfolk XIV -GARY 17

Norm had honed his chops on guitar as well and gained invaluable performance and business experience and tips from a trip he’d made to Nashville a year or so before with songwriter, producer and concert impresario Otis, Winterfolk founder and director Brian Gladstone, professor of radio and songwriter Paul Cross and film-maker, songwriter and shows host Glen Hornblast all of them savvy veterans of the local grassroots music biz.

Bit by bit other tunes started to emerge, numbers like another of his signature hits, “Strong Enough For Love” —which is such a powerfully timeless and universal ballad that fellow artist Nicole Coward (who’s practically in a duo with him whenever they can arrange their schedules to appear together) adopted it for the title track and only cover for her 2014 six-song ep, on which he and his harp also appear.

Harpin’ Norm at Winterfolk album release 170218 -JENN WILSON

Gradually his songs have, while still featuring love at the core, evolved to also encompass a lot of social equality, environmental and justice issues, with tunes like “Food and Water First” having established their own audience among thoughtful fans who resonate with his convictions and commonsense observations and philosophy.

And then finally, after years of being cajoled, came the long-awaited release in February of his debut album (The World’s Stongest Man —how about that!) which, as I told you at the time, is chock full of “delightfully touching and irresistibly catchy numbers,” all of them reinforcing the glories and nurturing, healing, power of love in all its forms.

Fellow players understandably consider it a privilege to be part of the combo that he’s now utilizing to deliver his songs to even better effect.  With Coward on percussion and chiming in her trademark ethereally beautiful vocals to augment his, multi-instrumentalist and fun-loving go-to guy Brian Jantzi on hand and versatile and relaxed bassist Kevin Jeffrey holding the bottom end steady, the group delivers his tunes with all the richness and excitement they deserve.

Remarkably, even as his profile has grown exponentially, he has remained pretty much the same diffident, agreeable but canny fellow he’s always been.  The only difference I’ve noted is that for his album release at Winterfolk this year he’s exchanged what had been a trademark ball cap for a wonderful Stetson that looks far more fitting for the subdued but real charisma that exudes from him on stage.

You’ll have an opportunity to see what headgear he chooses for tonight and to see the rest of the band with him up close and personal if you get over to Free Times Café at 320 College Street before his show there tonight starts at 8 p.m.

Cover is just $10 and it’s also a good chance to pick up one of Norm’s albums (he also has limited edition copies of other tunes available) while you’re there.  There’s usually a beer special on and the grub here is really good, honed by 37 years of experience in the same location.

Do arrive early because the stage is in a small room at the back and it will fill up early.  If you’re downtown and want to make a day of hearing great music, btw, you could also consider visiting the room in the afternoon for Brian Gladstone’s 1-4 or so weekly open stage there and nearby at Graffiti’s on Baldwin The Sin City Boys, featuring guitar ace/songwriter Kevin Jollimore do a no-cover 4-7 Rockabilly/Tex Mex matinee that’s one of the most dynamic such shows you’ll ever see.
