Harpin’ Norm’s album release at Winterfolk will be a love-in | TorontoMoon.ca 170218Sa | Shows for Sat. Feb. 18, 2017

Harpin’ Norm Lucien @ Winterfolk XIV -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

With Valentines Day just past some clubs are still holding love-oriented events tonight, but nowhere will it feel like a love-in any more than is bound to be the atmosphere for the release of Roots songwriter Harpin’ Norm Lucien’s debut full-length album this evening as part of Winterfolk XV.

That’s not just because affable, witty (but seldom acerbic) Norm, who’s a familiar presence across the city both backing other composers on harp at showcases and open mics, and also with guitar in hand sharing his own tunes, has endeared himself to many on the Roots scene.

And the album itself, The World’s Strongest Man, is a kind of paean to love in various forms, reminding us that not only is Norm a sharp-witted and passionate advocate for social justice and environmental protection, he’s also got a loving, sweet soul.

From the kickoff track, “How Much Love”, through delightfully touching and irresistibly catchy numbers like “Raise Your Candles” (written for frequent musical companion Nicole Coward and her husband for their recent wedding), “The Sparkle In Your Eyes”, “Anything For Love”, “I’ll Love You ‘Till The Cows Come Home” and of course his classic “Strong Enough For Love”, the theme here is pretty clear.

Harpin’ Norm cd ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ cover art

No doubt he would have titled the disc after that latter tune had not Coward, who appears doing backup vocals on five tracks here, already released one with that name featuring her cover of his timeless musical declaration that strength is not really about blustering braggadocio or heavy-handedness, but in resisting those instincts in order to share compassion and empathy with our fellow humans, and to the planet.

In addition to the love that spills out of nearly every track here, there’s also a rich tapestry of Norm’s harmonica playing —on “Above The Trees” he weaves five mouth organ tracks into an ethereal musical mosaic.  To Norm, at least, the harp is still an integral part of his music identity, even if in our minds it’s been eclipsed by his powerfully message songs with robust lyrics and, of course, his lovely expressions of the fundamental human need for love, both here and on other tunes.

For this evening’s release show from 8 till 10 at Terri O’s bar as part of the Winterfolk XV festivities [see full schedule for today’s shows under TO EAST listings section] Norm will have Nicole along with bass player-to-the-stars Kevin Jeffrey and versatile Brian Jantzi on second guitar and possibly other instruments also backing him.  I’d be shocked if a few other players, who are bound the crowd the house for this event, don’t also end up getting up to add a few harmonies or riffles or fills or whatever at various points as well.

Cover for Winterfolk is $20, which gets you into any one or all of the “non-ticketed” shows taking place today and tomorrow. (There are also a few special event shows taking place for which a separate ticket charge applies.)  If you’re not able to make today’s release you can also purchase the album online for $15 through a difficult-to-find but working link on his website.

But on a beautiful evening such as is expected tonight, it’s indeed far better an idea to get out to the club in person and get on board Norm’s love train.  And being able to do that in the middle of winter (even if it does happen to feel like spring) is exactly what Winterfolk is all about.
