Intersection of talents is a Junction area hallmark | TorontoMoon.ca 170128Sa | Shows for Sat. Jan. 28, 2017

\ TO WEST \

As is not in any way unusual for a Saturday, this afternoon and this evening in the Junction area and Roncesvalles strip adjoining it, once again a remarkably appealing menu of musical talents of diverse genres is on offer.

Shows this afternoon include a hot young Roots-Rockabilly songwriter, Lucas Stagg, and his band (which includes veteran drummer Cleave Anderson) guesting with Bill Heffernan at his weekly 5-8 “Saturday Sessions” shindig at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles.  As we’ve told you previously, these afternoon no-cover gatherings are always a hoot and always popular, so it’s a good idea to arrive well beforehand if you hope to get a seat near the performance area around the in-house grand piano.

Lucas Stagg -GARY 17

The evening offers two rather different but highly appealing options along Dundas St. West in the heart of the Junction.

Another group led by an energetic and talented young songwriter, Freeman Dre and The Kitchen Party, is recording an album live at Junction City Music Hall, 2907 Dundas St. W., a little past Keele St. starting at 9 p.m.

Freeman Dre @ Horseshoe -JENNIFER WILSON

The group is regularly featured at Cameron House downtown, occasionally at Dakota Tavern and been showcased at Winterfolk (and returns this year) and won a Best Songwriter Award from NOW Magazine. It made a big impact when it opened for Julian Taylor at his Desert Star album release show at Horseshoe Tavern last fall and is definitely going places.  Cover is $10.

George Baumann on sax & Dave McManus on bass -GARY 17

A little further west is the show that I’d have to regard as the highlight of the night and indeed is a kind of annual de facto late New Year’s levee (well, it is Chinese New Years I guess, so maybe not so late this year!) for musicians in the area.

Bass player and string-puller in other ways Dave McManus holds yet another
“It’s All About Dave” birthday bash at The Cat and once again is bringing in a ton of local talents along with his Junction City All Stars band to celebrate.

The no-cover affair includes appearances by the Roots ‘n’ Branches duo (Bob McNiven and Howard Willett) while McNiven will also double as an All Star band member along with drummer Bart der Stepanian, George Baumann on sax and Juno-winning Blues titan Julian Fauth on keys.

(Speaking of Fauth, if you happen to be in the area early afternoon, Julian continues to appear every Saturday from noon-3 at yet another Junction live music room, Axis at 3048 Dundas St. W., for no cover, and usually does a lot of his brilliant and powerful original Tin-Pan-Alley style ballads.)

Based on how things ran at the last one of Dave’s parties I attended at The Cat two years ago, I’d expect a lot of other special musical guests will also be getting up either with the band or during breaks.

There’s no cover for the show in the room at 3513 Dundas St. W. (a little east of Jane) and things will get underway around 9:30. If the inevitable dancing and carousing works up an appetite in you, you’ll be happy to know food is pretty decent and reasonably priced along with the beverages.
