Ironic irony: Kyp Harness releasing album of greatest hits tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 170806Su | Shows for Sun. August 06, 2021

Kyp Harness in 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

So what do you call it, I wonder, when irony is itself ironic?  When the use of irony is itself an act of irony?  Because whatever that is, it is precisely what describes tonight’s release by iconoclastic and idiosyncratic songwriter Kyp Harness of a new album at the Tranzac Club.

I’ve written on a few occasions here now about Harness’s formidable lyrical talent, which I’ve been a fan of for over 20 years.  Most recently here I described his artistic gifts in some detail in telling you on March 24 of last year about the release show for his then-newest album, Stoplight Moon, at Dakota Tavern.

No doubt Harness, who’s whipsmart clever, a wordsmith nonpareil (check out my review in the East York Chronicle magazine of his debut novel “Wigford Rememberies” from earlier this year!) had a little snicker as he decided on the title of this disc, Kyp Harness Greatest Hits, since he’s not —to the chagrin of a cult following that includes many famous fellow songwriters along with this scribe— anything like a celebrtity mainstream star.

You won’t find his name on many, if any, radio or album sales charts and you’ll probably never see him headlining any of the supposedly street-savvy music festivals being promoted by Music Toronto and their corporate concert cohort in various “village squares” like Yonge-Dundas, Nathan Phillips, Trinity and so forth.

Album cover art for ‘Kyp Harness Greatest Hits’

Yet the deeper irony of him using that title for this 14-track fourteenth album is that he has written a number of hits —if, like me, you define the term “hit” as a song that is catchy, memorable and hugely respected by fellow artists and any other fans lucky enough to hear it.

For while 98 out of a hundred people you stop in the street probably have no idea who Kyp Harness is, the 2% who do, regard him —in the words of fellow songwright Ron Sexsmith— as “every bit as powerful as Dylan, Cohen and Lennon combined” and “one of the finest songwriters on the planet.”

Such ardent admirers of Kyp are Sexsmith and other knowledgeable industry folk like keyboardist-songwriter and producer Bob Wiseman, that, as I recounted at the time, a panopoly of fellow artists, organized by Wiseman, in March of 2013 got together to stage a tribute concert honouring him by doing covers of 13 of his tunes —and he didn’t even have to die for it!

The new album, which contains several high-profile appearances by musical guests likely to be on hand tonight, is a selection of “fan favourites” Harness says on his website.  And based on the stature and discerning tastes of his followers, you can be guaranteed they’re all powerful numbers.

Given that Kyp Harness’s genius is powerful enough that he has already successfully defied both posthumous appreciation and artistic pigeon-holing, it perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise if, at tonight’s 7:30 show in the Southern Comfort room of the club at 292 Brunswick Ave. in the Annex, he can conquer irony too.
