It’s Winter, folks, so it must be music festival season —right? | TorontoMoon.ca 180119Fr | Shows for Friday, January 19, 2022

Wintersong promotional poster

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then songwriter and TO/GTA Roots scene mover and shaker Brian Gladstone must feel his ego being polished to a sheen this weekend.  Until he started his now iconic Winterfolk Festival on a whim, a dream and a shoestring sixteen years ago now, no one ever would have dreamed of holding a music festival in the dead of winter.  Now, this year’s event hits sweet sixteen when it takes place over the Family Day weekend Feb. 16-18.

But lo and behold, this weekend there are not one but three festival-style events happening involving in two cases several venues and in the third an actual outdoor location (!)

The outdoor thing is being staged for the hardy souls of Orangeville —and having lived there for a couple of years I can tell you, you gotta be tough to endure the place!— who area actually blessed with a lot of talented bands in the area, as we’ve told you before in writing about the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival on a few occasions.  Several bands perform this evening and tomorrow at “Brewapalooza” taking place in the large parking lot at 82 Broadway St., the burgh’s main drag.

Soundsof The City -Winter ’18 logo

Also north of the city, over east in Stouffville, the good folks from Epidemic Music Group are staging another spectacular event that sort of arose out their successful Guinness World Record setting concert this past spring.  Organizer Kevin Ker told The Toronto Star in a piece published Wednesday that it was partly an attempt to recapture the vibe of that marathon enterprise.  But the “Wintersong Music Festival” (love the name!) is taking place tonight and tomorrow at eight Stouffville venues (the area has always been a bit of a little hotbed of live music —as we began telling you in to-nite magazine back in the late ‘90s, when Grant Fullerton’s seminal room Fullerton’s was an advertiser, along with the Duchess of Markham and other area rooms.

The Wintersong lineup includes some impressive acts among the 50+ performers and the highlight of the weekend will come tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when a Guinness judge makes a formal presentation of the certificate naming the nearly three-week event at Earl of Whitchurch starting last March 17 as the world’s longest continuous concert staged by multiple performers.  Full kudos to Ker and his crew for their ambition and powerful organizational ability to be able to pull off that concert and since then he’s expanded his activities to include starting up new open mics and recording a live compilation cd of local artists.

The festival is a nice touch too —my only problem with it is than nowhere among a multiplicity of Facebook events including a master FB event, and even a FB group established for the new project is there a comprehensive listing of who plays where, when and there appears to be scant mention of any details on Epidemic’s own Facebook page.  Many of the participants have created their own events for their individual sets but these generally don’t list who else is on the bill with them and other start times, etc. Consequently, we only have a few of the actual artists and shows listed —what there is appears in the 905 North-East section and is tagged with a Wintersong moniker.

[UPDATE at 3p.m.: Epidemic has just posted a full list of players, times and places on the festival group page.]

A more experienced group of festival presenters, meanwhile are also staging a multi-venue four-day event that started last night and runs tonight, tomorrow and Sunday, in downtown TO.  I’ve been critical of Music City North in the past for not always making full details available, but promoter Jeannie Reid and her crew have got it all together for this weekend’s five-room installment of their Soundtrack of the City series.

In addition to a main event page (SOTC -Winter 18) which outlines the scope of the event, there’s an event for each of the five clubs taking part plus daily events for each club and each of those various events contains a full weekend lineup with set times and links to the various artists’ pages or websites.  It’s very well done.  In our listings, as a result, we’re able to include all the artists’ names and set times plus provide for each club a link to their specific page for the weekend.  This is how you promote indie artists!
