Jan Kudelka as Janis Joplin -cropped PROMO PIC

\ TO DOWNTOWN \

Janis Joplin has been dead for over 46 years now yet her entrancing persona and groundbreaking approach to Blues/Soul singing lives on as fresh as it was during her heyday in the late 60s, when she was part of a generation that redefined North American music and culture.

And artists like Jan Kudelka, who’s been reincarnating Joplin since 1981 —albeit with a 20-year break in the mid-‘90s until a couple of years ago— are still keeping Janis’s sizzling spirit and sound alive and will do so again tonight to mark what would have been her 74th birthday.

It’s interesting to speculate where Joplin would be in the pantheon of still-active greats if she were alive today.  I have to think it’s likely that at this point she’d be a fully fledged diva, still strutting stages and maybe even teaming up with fellow vocal icons like Mick Jagger, Cher or Aretha Franklin for special shows.

Given the lack of innovation and true excitement of contemporary radio music, her daring and her danger are perhaps all the more needed today for a new generation to experience.

Kudelka, an original cast member of “Hair” and alumna of Theatre Passe Murraille and Stratford Theatre, is also a playwright who created a full-blown show based around Joplin’s material, “Janis Janus,” that has been hailed by critics.

While Hugh’s Room won’t be able to host tonight’s long-planned celebration of Joplin’s putative 74th as planned (since it’s still closed, though with prospects of re-opening at some point soon), arrangements have been made for the show to go ahead on the big stage in the main room at Tranzac Club at 292 Brunswick Ave. in the Annex.

It starts at 8:30, tickets are $35 and all ducats that were pre-sold through Hugh’s will be honoured at the door.
