Kim Doolittle’s new disc releases tonight at Hugh’s Room | TorontoMoon.ca 170608Th | Shows for Thurs. June 08, 2022

Kim Doolittle’s ‘Into The Blue’ album cover excerpt

\ TO WEST \

It is very sad to me and in fact a source of great pain that people like hugely talented Country/Blues singer-songwriter Kim Doolittle —about whom I’ve been writing for 25 years and who releases her latest cd, Into The Blue, tonight— have opted not to support this publication since I switched from an ad-revenue based model to a subscriber-based one 9 years ago in the naïve belief that more artists actually appreciated the promotion I’ve done for them, as they so often used to claim when club ads paid the bills.

Although I’ve consequently basically lost touch with Kim I’ve stayed a fan of her music.  I still rave about and play selections from her magnificent 1998 Country-Pop disc Natural Born Woman at events I host.  The cover story I wrote calling the work “a polished gem” was actually the first to appear on our former to-nite.net website when it debuted with to-nite‘s issue #133 on November 18 of that year.

Like us, Kim has had her ups and downs in the intervening nearly 20 years between then and tonight’s release show at happily re-opened Hugh’s Room at 2261 Dundas St. West.  She spent some time working on cruise ships, has moved house and home a couple of times at least, worked as a dog-walker and continued to at least occasionally make appearances as a special guest at various high-calibre musical events and headline a few shows herself.

During that time, also, two other fine Doolittle discs —Touch Wood in 2003 and a live recording in 2010— have been released and while I haven’t yet heard any of the tracks from her latest opus, I have little doubt that it’s another brilliant creation.  Certainly even just the names of the artists who collaborated with her on Into The Blue —pre-eminently producer Ken Whiteley and also veteran all-star calibre players like Pat Carey, Tom Leighton, Victor Bateman, Rob Quail and Bucky Berger— would pretty much guarantee that at the very least the performances will resonate.  And I’d be surprised if Doolittle has lost her prowess with lyric and melody —if anything this new work promises to be deeper and richer than what has led to it. 170520 Support the Moon

Cover for the 8:30 p.m. show is a very reasonable $22.50, though I’d assume for that price in this rather upscale room that copies of the album will be extra.  I won’t be there —I’m already blue enough thinking about lack of support for this publication and its possible demise if things don’t change— but I’m sure you’ll be in for a fine show if you attend.
