Michael Keys, who says he “plays a little piano” -PROMO

\ BURLINGTON \

It’s Good Friday, one of the holiest days on the Christian calendar and a public holiday for just about everyone except essential service workers like bartenders and musicians.

A lot of clubs respond by cancelling their live entertainment but others have learned over the years that there’s a market on this day for a certain kind of holiday afternoon entertainment somewhat similar to what many nowadays also offer Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

One good example the annual Good Friday Jam in Burlington in which piano man and singer Michael Keys always plays a prominent role.  The ace Boogie-Woogie, Blues, R&B/Soul, Pop and Rock veteran 88s man does a lot more than “play a little piano” as he likes to suggest with tongue in cheek in his promo.

For one thing he’s a member of the American Heritage organization’s Blues Hall of Fame, as we’ve reported previously, a distinction he heard through some years of performing as part of Jazz/Pop singer Danny B’s band.  I’ve also seen him share gigs with Mike McKenna and other great Blues performers and these days he appears regularly also with Ronnie Russell & The Corvairs, a vintage Pop/50-60s Rock outfit that does big stage gigs.

The event takes place from 1-5 p.m. at the Black Bull pub in Burlington at 1124 Guelph Line and in addition to being an all-ages affair there’s no cover and a wide variety of music is likely to be on tap.

The house band of which Keys is a member is fronted by Russ McAllister and offers a full backline, so players of guitars, harmonicas, keyboards, horns, spoons, drums, bagpies, kazoos or any other instrument are invited to sign up for a spot that guarantees them a minimum of two tunes.

The promo also encourages people to bring their families so that the kids can “see Dad and Mom rock!”  Sounds like a pretty great way to spend a Friday afternoon to me!
