\ TO WEST \

It’s been well over a year since we last told you about the return to gigging by engaging and often witty Country duo The McDales and in that time, while Herb Dale and Fran McCann have frequently been spotted at open stages and done several special guest appearances, they haven’t really done much in the way of actual gigs.

They’re not doing a full one today, either, but they will be performing at least a set in conjunction with Glen Hornblast at what he’s calling his Big Band show from 5-8 at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles Ave. just outside the Junction area of west TO.

I’m not entirely sure whether they’ll be sitting in as part of the larger group (which also includes Al Soberman on bass, Bob Cohen on guitar, Tom Hamilton on fiddle and possibly Dean Cavill on pedal steel) or doing a separate set —no doubt accompanied by at least some of the above players, since they’re very familiar with all of them both from their open stage hosting career and various band configurations.

Either way, it represents a great chance to catch up with the guitar-bass harmonizing couple and to reacquaint yourself with Herb’s catchy, sometimes amusing and down-to-earth tunes with some very clever lyrics.  Topics range from happy love songs (several of them obviously meant for Fran) through ironic ditties about the artist’s life and recountings of conquering addiction from his wild younger days before getting clean and sober a few decades ago.

Presumably Herb will also have copies of one or more of his albums of originals with him (Ticket In My Hand and It Was About Time are the two I keep handy) and they’re always a pleasure to spin when you feel the need for an honest-to-goodness uplift and mood brightener.

[You can see a video of Herb performing his signature tune, “Just Like Willie Nelson” on the Moon site’s embedded player.]

For his part, Glen promises that in addition to several numbers from his so far only album, Once In A Blue Moon, he’ll also be doing a couple of new tunes with the group.  The show is a great and most appropriate lead-in, btw, to next week’s anticipated return to the room at 403 Roncesvalles of Bill Heffernan with his weekly “Saturday Sessions: cavalcade showcases in the same time slot.

Glen will have to hustle to make it there in time to set up, however, as prior to this event he’s the co-host for poet Linda Stitt’s monthly first-Saturdays “Words and Music Salon” show of song and poetry from 1–4:30 p.m. at Vino Rosso (995 Bay Street).  For that one he’ll also be joined by featured songwriter guests Glen Gary and Marp Ripp along with several poets.

There’s no cover for either of these shows and both rooms are inviting and pleasant to be in —especially with the kind of musical talent that will be gracing them today.
