Michael Theodore back in the Sunday saddle starting today

\ ETOBICOKE SOUTH \

For the past eight years or so, Pop balladeer Michael Theodore and his “four-piece trio” (which always includes Robbie Rox as conga player/backup singer and usually a bass player and a saxophonist) appeared almost every Sunday afternoon as the feature attraction at Timothy’s Pub in Etobicoke before the club opted earlier this year to try something different.

While Theodore still performs occasionally at Timothy’s as part of its Tuesday through Saturday shows lineup, it seemed very strange to not see him with a weekly residency, since even before he started at Timothy’s he had a few long-running engagements at other west end rooms.

Indeed, it’s hard to keep this irrepressible and strangely magnetic multi-genre and high-energy talent out of the limelight for long. Shortly after the Timothy’s run ended he was back in action in mid-June with a 4-piece combo at the club where he returns today, Irish Shebeen at 5555 Eglinton Ave. West.

A fine songwriter whose debut 2003 album The Truth About Love and Tragedy demonstrated his huge range, which includes mastery of Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz and R&B, this sparkplug has a way of igniting rooms once he gets into a groove, whether solo or with various band configurations that he utilizes.

(He also has a newer album, Leaving Familiar recorded with his star-studded full band, SOS that includes drummer Gary Taylor, trumpet master Kevin Turcotte and keyboard wiz Rob Gusevs, among others.)

For today’s 4-8 no-cover show at the Shebeen he’ll have, in addition to Rox, keyboardist Matt Horner and sax player Rich Howse on board and presumably copies of his new album available.
