A visitation with the family and memorial service for the late Mike Murphy will be held on Sunday, October 1 in the facility in Pine Hills Cemetery where he used to love riding his bike, the family has announced.
Visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m. in the building at 625 Birchmount Rd., just north of St. Clair Ave. E, to be followed there by a secular service from 11 till noon.
Following that, starting at 2 p.m. members of his band The Repairmen and others will stage a life celebration jam at nearby Birchmount Tavern at 462 Birchmount Rd. at Danforth Road. It’s the same room in which Mike and the group had been hosting a weekly Sunday afternoon for the past few months prior to his sudden passing the morning of Sunday September 24.
Friends have also set up an online “In Memory of Mike Murphy” fundraiser on GoFundMe.com. Initially set up to help cover funeral costs, at the request of the family the funds collected will instead be directed to the Regent Park School of Music, which helps disadvantaged youth in the inner city develop musical skills.
The family feels that “Mike would want to pass on the gift of music to someone who may not have the means to follow their passion for music” otherwise, the page states.
