Wayne "Neon" Smith 2016 -GARY 17

Wayne “Neon” Smith 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Whether providing accompaniment on sax or flute, fronting his Amazing Tubular Orchestra Rock ‘n’ Roll band or sharing original ballads or covers solo on acoustic guitar, Wayne “Neon” Smith brings 100% solid musicianship and soul to his performance.

I only first heard him this past summer while attending the now sadly defunct Saturday open stage being hosted by Carmen Toth at The Grover in the Upper Beaches area in TO and I was impressed not only with his own set but also by how he was able to back me on flute doing songs he’d never heard before!

He also used sax and flute to back others such as Jade Wan on their originals and demonstrated an acutely sensitive ear and sense of timing and place.

Tonight I’d expect him to be in solo guitar mode as he’s the featured guest at the weekly Fat Albert’s coffee house acoustic open stage in the Steelworkers Hall at 25 Cecil Street across from Grossman’s Tavern.  But this busy eclectic talent (last he was backing indie band Focused with his sax prowess at Supermarket downtown) will be bringing his full band into Black Swan this Friday, October 21, if you’re unable to get to tonight’s set.

This evening Wayne will take to the cozy stage at the iconic open stage around 9 p.m., with a steady stream of songwriters preceding him starting at 7 p.m. (sign-up begins at 6:30) and afterwards till 11 or later.  If you do go, btw, you might also want to pop into Grossman’s afterwards:  this week near-legendary drummer Owen Tennyson is hosting that club’s Wednesday Blues/Rock jam with his Owen’s Sound band so the house group at least is guaranteed to be first-rate.
