Coat Songs2

\ TO WEST \

This time of year, when a thick carpet of snow blankets the city, various community organizations and government agencies, etc., are active using a variety of methods to collect warm winter clothing for the unfortunates who have been spewed out by the maw of capitalism onto our urban streets to fend as best they can.  With prices for housing allowed to spiral out of control, that population tragically seems to grow with every month that passes.

When musicians step up to help they use, naturally, music as a way of encouraging others to donate what they can to contribute to the band-aid being applied to this gaping social wound.  And this evening a group of players will be doing just that at the Smiling Buddha in TO West, but focusing their tuneage on a theme to help draw attention to the screaming need for clothing to help protect the vulnerable victims of avarice who are living “rough” amongst us.

Composer, arranger and Juno Award winner Tony Quarrington teams up with Zoe Adams for a Jazz/Roots set; Lucas Stagg, Cleave Anderson and Tim Jackson appear doing Mod Rock tunes as The Beat Club; the indie Rock band Ectomeso Endo and Punkabilly outfit Broke Up Hearts will all perform “songs about coats” according to the Facebook promo for the 7 p.m. show.

Following their sets there’s also “an open call to perform a song about a coat.”  Songwriters who want to be included are asked to contact the organizers on Facebook to sign up but I can’t imagine they’d turn away anyone who shows up to take part in the room at 961 College St. between Ossington and Dufferin.

There’s no mention of a cover charge but participants and audience members are encouraged to bring “a gently used m/f coat, touque, mitts, scarf, boots” etc. to be donated to the Fred Victor Respite Centre.
