Questions may arise hearing Traz as part of ABC Circle tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 171114Tu | Shows for Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Jace Traz @ Relish, 2016 -GARY 17

Jace Traz @ Relish, 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Most often seen on the music scene behind a drum kit with other musicians (which is about the only time he’s at all constrained by norms or parameters), gifted artist, compelling songwriter and sartorial dandy Jace Traz is worth going out of your way to see perform when he takes the lead to play his originals.

You could do that tonight as a matter of fact and enjoy the bonus of also hearing alt-Pop songsmith (and Traz band-mate in The East End Love and often Sunday nights at Relish) David Macmichael (about whom we’ve written many times) along with Chelsea Reed as part of the weekly ABC Songwriters Circle showcase at Amsterdam Bicycle Club.

"Robot" art by Jace Traz

“Robot” -art by Jace Traz

Traz has a retro-80s Pop Rock musical style, penetratingly engaging lyrics and unusual, inventive and almost at times bizarre rhymings —“windows” with “wind blows,” “lotion” with “ocean,” “basket with “ask it,” “blanket” with “thank it” and “salads” with “ballads” in “Start To Cry” is as good an example as any.

Like that of his prize-winning art, the subject matter of his songs, as indicated in titles including “Cougars” (not the mountain cats), “Rape Van” and, along with ‘…Cry,’ another Traz crowd-fave, “Pistachio Girl,” is all over the map. But all of them have a catchy, dance-driving throb and his vocals are always compelling, if eerily so at times.

Jace’s stage costumes (and really, there’s no other way to describe how he dresses —even when not performing!) are equally often outrageous, sometimes reflecting a theme, other times apparently just spilling out of a creative mind seemingly out of control, like walking abstract art, and are always fascinatingly engaging to regard.

The three artists, along with host songwriter Robert Pelletier (aka Felix of Felix and the Cats) who I expect will also do a few tunes, will be arrayed in-the-round style on stage in the room at 54 Esplanade.

The 9-12 session will also, as we told you a few weeks ago, include conversations about their creative process and an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.  I have little doubt onlookers will have many of those after hearing a couple of Traz tunes!
