\ TO CENTRAL \

Tonight is the long-awaited release of eclectic songwriter Julian Taylor’s new double-album, Desert Star, at Lee’s Palace with his self-titled band.  And all indications are that it is going to be a watershed event for this amiable and supremely talented artist who excels in several genres, including Rock, Dance, Reggae, Soul, Pop and Roots.

I have not yet had the luxury of being able to make the time to listen to the entire album, which is being released on vinyl as well as digitally and on compact disc, but what I’ve heard inclines me to want to simply parrot the rave review it received in the cover story of the September 16 issue of Cashbox magazine written by Pat Blythe, who calls it “one of my favourite albums of all time.”

Rather than crib from that review and/or attempt to fake a proper one of my own, I’m going to suggest instead that readers simply go to the magazine’s website and read it.  From all I’ve heard, it’s bang on.

Better still, just get to the 8 p.m. show tonight in the club at 529 Bloor St. West and hear the entire release performed live.  As another writer, Kerry Doole of www.fyimusic.com, also wrote as part of an article released today, the band particularly excels at performing live —an observation with which I heartily agree.

Cover is just $15 and, if this album does what I expect it will, it may be the last time you can see this particular group for such a reasonable admission charge.  You’ll also enjoy supporting sets by soulful songwriter Anne Vriend and fabulous Roots-Rockers Freeman Dre & The Kitchen Party.
