Roaring into March with special event shows - TorontoMoon.ca 150301Su Shows for Sunday, March 01, 2022

With Spring now in view (even though the return of sprouting things each year seems to happen a lot later than the third week of March for the past few decades) perhaps there’s a new energy infusing the music scene today.

The desire to roar into March full throttle might explain why Sunday March 1 happens to include several special shows across the GTA featuring particularly high-energy and high-calibre talents.

In the hamlet of Uxbridge located in the north-east quadrant of the GTA, some of Durham Region’s most talented Blues performers will be gathering for a Beat The Winter Blues cavalcade from 6-10. It includes two-time Blues Album Of The Year Juno winner Jack de Keyzer, up-and-coming Blues sensation Johnny Cox (whom I told you about just a few days ago) and towering talent Howard Ross, all backed by his stellar Full Count Blues Band that today includes Richard Thornton on sax. The show takes place at Wixansbridge, a room I hadn’t heard of before but that Ross says is a fave among local foodies. Cover is just $10 —a steal for such a stellar lineup.

Glen Hornblast’s first multi-artist showcase in 2013 -Gary 17

At Free Times Café downtown Folk treasure and nowadays show organizer Glen Hornblast is hosting a special edition of his monthly Nashville Bound showcase series to raise some dough for non-profit Fat Albert’s Coffee House. To do so he’s recreating part of the vibe of the very first multi-artist concert series he sponsored two years ago, starting Jan. 6, 2013 at Dave’s on St. Clair, when he, Meg Tennant, Tony Hanik and The Curries kicked off his Songwriters In The Round series. They’ll all be back for tonight’s show starting at 8 along with at least five other quality acts. Cover is just $5 or pay-what-you-can.

Big Tobacco & The Pickers 5-piece at Rock ‘n’ Horse Saloon -Gary 17

In TO’s west end, meanwhile, rollicking Country band Big Tobacco & The Pickers are part of a bill that also includes boots’n’sass songwriter Samantha Martin’s band plus New Country Rehab and a duo as part of SHINE 2015 at Lula Lounge on Dundas St. West starting at 7 p.m. Cover’s $25 but it goes to a good cause: supporting the SHINE music bursary.

Michael Keith -Facebook

Further west, on Jane St. a couple blocks north of Bloor St., versatile Blues/Rock/Jazz/World musical explorer Michael Keith begins a four-week Sunday residency for a new acoustic solo series at On Cue Billiards. No cover and it gets underway at 8.
