Shawn Brady signals excitement for new album release tonight

\ TORONTO EAST \

You can’t judge an album by its cover and you certainly can’t really do so either from listening to just one track. But if the rest of the new Broken Traffic Lights album from Shawn Brady is anything like the “Last Night In Tokyo” sample I’ve heard, those who pick up the disc at its TO release party tonight are in for one lively ride.

Of course, as I mentioned in a previous piece, “high-energy” is Brady’s calling card whenever he performs live.

Brady —who’s frontman for the acclaimed U2 tribute Elevation as well as principal singer-guitarist for other acts such as the Eye Pod Shuffle party Rock combo when he’s not leading his own Electric Blood outfit— released the new disc in his hometown of Sudbury a couple of weeks ago to a full house and great media reviews.

The track I’ve heard, “Last Night In Tokyo”, [hear it on our Featured Tracks page] is a lively and full-on produced orgy of Rock vocals with high-torque guitars which to me echoed somewhat of a more orchestrated Rush or Bruce Springsteen. There’s definitely a kind of 80s-90s arena feel to the lush production. And it rocks!

But the lyrics are all Brady —and edgy, with lines like “tonight we’ll shine like razor blades and cut the night into the day” and “she’s pulling me away from love and closer to prescription drugs.”

Tonight Brady brings the live performance of the album (with yet another musical combo, the Northern Sons Band) to TO’s Opera House at 725 Queen Street East.

He’ll also have guest artists Don Campbell and Four Letter World opening the 8 p.m. show, for which admission is $20 and doors open at 7.
