Sunday jammers still Freefalling after ten years | TorontoMoon.ca 170115Su | Shows for Sun. Jan. 15, 2017

\ TO DOWNTOWN \

I have never actually attended one of the “Freefall Sundays” open stage/jam nights held for the past ten years —as of tonight— at the Supermarket bar at 268 Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market near College St.

So I cannot rhapsodize from any personal experience about what a well-run event this is, nor extoll how it’s enabled legions of singer-songwriters to connect with new fans and one another, and how its existence has helped bolster artists’ self-esteem enough that more than a few strong talents have emerged from that scene.

Tony Rabalao & Steve York celebrate a previous anniversary -FACEBOOK

But everything I’ve heard about these 7pm-1am shows from every musician I’ve talked to on the subject has been very positive —save the fact that sometimes the list of participants is so long that you have to wait quite a while before getting up.  (Ah, the woes of success!)

I’d expect that this will be even more the case tonight as hosts Steve York and Tony Rabalao celebrate hitting the decade mark for the event, about which we’ve told you before in an article mentioning the 8th anniversary show in 2015.

(Curiously, although for at least the past two years the anniversary celebration nights have been either the last Sunday in January or first in February, it seems to have been moved up a couple of weeks this year.)

Read about it or talk to anyone who’s been there and then —if like me you haven’t previously attended— decide whether you want to dare trying to make your debut tonight.  Of course whether or not you are a performer, if you have an interest in hearing eager talents whom you may or may not already be familiar with, you might just want to be there anyways to get in on the ground floor of their next decade.
