Talents toast music bursary recipients at Lula tonight | 160306Su | TorontoMoon.ca Shows for Sunday, March 06, 2022

\ TO WEST \

One of the great things about social media is that it allows the discovery of, and thereby helps to nourish, a wide range of initiatives and organizations that are aimed at encouraging and promoting musical artists, including the young up-and-coming talents of tomorrow.

Tonight an occasion that’s a great example of such undertakings takes place at Lula Lounge, as a panoply of diverse talents put on a concert to celebrate the young recipients of this year’s SHINE! Music Bursary.

The annual grant of up to $2,000 is intended to support young musicians 16-24 years of age who face financial barriers to their quest of furthering their study or practice of traditional or Folk music, with several disbursed each year.

Originally known as the Jim Fay Music Bursary, according to the organization’s website, SHINE was inaugurated in 2010 by the family and friends of the late guitar and mandolin player, who was an ardent fan and performer of Celtic, Folk and acoustic music.

Fay also “consistently encouraged others to foster their musical pursuits,” the site says, so after he died of a heart attack at just 44 in 2008, some of his pals set up the bursary to honour his memory. It now also honours the memory of the late James Gray, who passed away in 2013 and left a similar legacy of selflessly nurturing other talents.

Tonight’s 6-10 show includes headline performances by Julian Taylor and Simone Denny as well as appearances by Shelley Coopersmith, Grier Coppins and the Urban Highlanders, Michelle Rumball, Chris Staig, Derek Downham and some of this year’s award recipients.

Cover for the show at 1585 Dundas St. W., between Dufferin and Lansdowne, is $25 and you can be sure the dough will go towards the best of causes.
