Donkey in 2015 -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

As we told you back in November, songwriter and acclaimed vegeran Pop Rock guitarist Alex Radeff has been appearing weekly Tuesday afternoons for the past several months (with a short break over the holiday period) for a 12-3 lunch show at downtown’s True Love Café on Dundas St. E. at Sherbourne.

But while those no-cover shows are basically designed to be a kind of sonic wallpaper for the funky little restaurant’s lunch time crowd, he’s better known for his recordings and shows with his Donkey band, as we’ve described on a few occasions over the years.

The persistently focused and resolute songwriter has an impressive discography, including his most recent product, 2016’s Furthermore…, which we raved about on the occasion of its release at The Rivoli on November 12 of that year.

As I wrote then, “The album is laced with 60s style songwriting and sounds, though it’s most certainly not derivative, as Radeff has his own unique approach to a wide range of musical tricks and sensibilities.   There’s everything from psychedelic sonic sweeps and swirls describing the love affair between “The Donkey & The Unicorn” to more doleful minor-key laments of lost loves, opportunities and time on tunes like “I Stayed in Hamburg” and “I Should Be With You” or chunkier, even menacing Rock riffs on songs like “Nocturnal Awake” and “Tent City”.  There’s lots of other idiosyncratic innovation that makes ditties like “Strange Cat” and “I Beg To Differ”, while not really fitting in any recognizable category, strangely catchy and soon feeling welcomely familiar on multiple listens.”

This evening you can hear some of that material when Radeff appears with the trio for the weekly Tuesday songwriters series at superb listening room Relish at 2152 Danforth Ave. a block east of the newly renovated Woodbine subway station.  There’s no cover for the 7-9-or-later two-set appearance and the open kitchen’s tapas style food is yummy, while the fully stocked bar, with 21 or more craft beers and ciders on tap and premium liquors, is also certain to include something you’ll enjoy heartily.
