\ SCARBOROUGH \

As the deep freeze bites yet again many clubs are still in the doldrums after New Year’s Eve and not presenting any live music tonight, but one room in Scarborough that somewhat regularly has live bands is dark and cold for a very different reason.

Overnight on Dec. 30-31 a fire apparently broke out inside The Loaded Dog at 1921 Lawrence Ave. E. near Warden and caused “extensive damage to the building” according to a statement on the club’s Facebook group.

One of the few rooms in Scarborough that I actually have enjoyed attending over the past few years, the Dog unabashedly puts live music in second place behind sporting events telecast on its many tvs and big screens, enthusiastically sponsors local amateur teams and even puts on occasional live arm-wrestling and other “soft” sporting events.  With its bread and butter coming from tv sports, however, the timing for this catastrophe couldn’t be worse, with the Canadian Junior team in the playoff round this week, NFL playoffs starting Saturday and both the Leafs and Raptors seemingly on steady marches to the post-season.

Although their live music calendar is somewhat unpredictable, since sports takes priority, and it’s promotion of the bands they feature is rather spotty, when the Dog does have live bands, normally a few times a month, it does them up right.

The venue features a large well appointed stage with a great in-house sound system and some equipment and hires solid acts that put on a real show.  I’ve seen a lot of great talents on the stage and enjoyed many a visit there in the spacious room that also has a decent dance floor area in front of the stage and a rockin’ outdoor patio that’s a destination hang for Scarborough’s beautiful youth during the nice weather months.

All of that appears to have been gutted, based on news reports and one picture posted by the club on New Year’s Eve.  Although a post to their Facebook group said owner Phil Slaney was “heartbroken today” by the damage, by the next day the club was thanking patrons for an overwhelming outpouring of “love and support.”  A structural engineer was assessing the damage this week and the club has promised updates as soon as the situation is more clear.

Here’s hoping the room was properly insured and is able to recover from the disaster.  Based on what I’ve known of Phil and his sister Karen, who helps with many aspects of running the room, I’d expect that no matter what needs to be done, it won’t be long before the Dog bounces back, hopefully well before it’s time to show the Leafs hoisting the Stanley Cup.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the Scarborough area and looking for some great classic Rock happening tonight, check out McGradie’s Pub on Victoria Park Ave. at Ellesmere, where Al Reilly and his Catalyst crew are celebrating his “Sexy One” birthday with 10-2 no-cover show.
