Tonight’s show tribute to Nik Beat likely first of many

\ TORONTO EAST \

Although a funeral and life celebration for the late Nik Beat (born Michael Barry) already took place earlier this week, it seems likely that tonight’s dedication of a previously planned poetry gathering at Black Swan Tavern (at which he had originally been scheduled to read) to his talent will be only the first among several similar events.

Such was this multi-disciplinary talent’s impact on the local arts community, touchingly captured by close friend Kimberly Mallett (who will be filming tonight’s show) in “Nik Beat Beat-Kins Celebration of Life”, a Youtube video tribute she posted Friday based on footage from Wednesday’s post-funeral reception in the church basement.

Her video is a fitting followup and companion to one produced last weekend by another Beat pal, Michael Oesch, that was shown at the funeral and visitations.

Mallett’s video is a beautifully produced, short (17-1/2 minutes) commemoration of how the congregation (for, believers and non-believers alike, that’s what those in attendance all became by the end of the post-ceremony event, holding hands and hugging as one) found the silver lining hiding in the darkness of the despair all felt at losing this vibrant, vital and essential member of the local music, poetry, arts and broadcasting communities.

Among those taking to the stage at tonight’s 8-11 event (doors at 7) in the club at 154 Danforth Ave. will be several award-winning writers. I believe several will read at least one of Beat’s pieces as part of their set. The roster includes: Jeannine Pitas; Dane Swan; Sheila Stewart; Niki Koulouris; Jennifer Hosein; Robert Priest; Brenda Clews; Luciano Iacobelli; Anna Yin (with Mark Harry); David Day; Bänoo Zan; and Max Layton.
