Tony Quarrington in 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO UPTOWN \

If you enjoy live music but can’t really much abide the craziness of the “bar scene” with its blaringly bright oversized televisions mindlessly tuned to telecast sports you have no interest in, Boland’s Live Kitchen on a Wednesday from 5-8 might be just the ticket.

Here you’ll find no tvs (at least none show up on the photos you’ll find when you search it on Google Maps and this is clearly a restaurant rather than a neighbourhood bar), but will encounter an impressive open shelf of various wines, tasty looking dishes —and, most importantly from our point of view, multi-disciplinary songwriter/performer Tony Quarrington performing solo instrumental Jazz for no cover.

The room is located at 575 Mount Pleasant Avenue a little north of Davisville Ave. south of Eglinton and it’s a bit toney yet doesn’t come across as intimidating.  The menu isn’t scarily priced either, with tempting starters in the $9-14 range and most main dishes going for a little below or a bit above $20. 170314 LIKE TRIVAGO Moon pr

Although he’s an exquisitely gifted world-class talent (a Juno-winner whose presence helped other classy rooms to gain a profile on the local scene) Quarrington is also about the most self-effacing and relaxed fellow you’ll meet anywhere, so it’s a great fit to have him in a room that seems to have other quality offerings available without being stuffy about it.

Drink prices aren’t listed on their online menu except for a couple of specialties, but one item, which intriguingly they include as part of the “Starters” menu, definitely has me curious:  the Fresh Oyster Shooter with vodka, clamato, horseradish and lemon —and priced at just $3!

At that price you can buy a couple for yourself and another pair for Tony and let us know how you liked them!
