Irene Torres -Gary 17

Irene Torres is one of the featured artists -GARY 17

It’s a shame, really that so much great Blues talent is gathering to perform this evening at Lula Lounge in west TO.

Not because there’s anything wrong with the venue —I haven’t been to the room at 1585 Dundas St. West in a long time, but by all reports it continues to be a first class operation with a great stage, staff, etc.— nor because there’s anything wrong with the organizers, talent list or timing.

What offends is simply the reason why stellar artists like Harrison Kennedy, Cheryl Lescomb, Jerome Godboo, Brook Blackburn, Jay Douglas, Mr. Rick, Brian Blain, Robert Scott and Irene Torres have been enlisted to be part of the 7 p.m. fundraising concert.

For while the cause is noble, it seems to me that it’s an indictment of our civilization and our governmental “supports” that an organization like Red Door Family Shelter, which will receive proceeds from the $25 cover charge, has to exist at all in the first place and in the second must rely on efforts like this to keep its operations running smoothly.

This is a non-profit organization that has had to work overtime at overcoming ridiculous obstacles, such as being forced to move out of a location in east TO they’d been occupying for many years after developers purchased the property to put up condos.

They constantly have to pinch pennies and find revenue sources outside the box just to perform a function that surely is fundamental to social order: keeping families safe.  The fact that they’re not fully and generously funded by our governments to do whatever it takes to fulfill their mission is abominable.

I recall when I first heard about Red Door shortly after moving to TO, when I participated in a similar benefit for the organization that took place at the old Albert’s Hall in the late Brunswick House tavern in the Annex in late 1992 or early 1993.   Twenty-five years later, after proving their worth and their financial acuity many times over, why are they still forced to rely on this sort of event to make ends meet?  It’s a social disgrace.

My rant having been made, however, I also have to tell you that this evening’s affair, being hosted by eminent Blues/Jazz artist and Big Rude Jake, really is going to be a night of spectacular Blues/Jazz performances.  The guests listed above will have a house band of quality worthy of their talents, namely Margaret Stowe on guitar, Alison Young on sax, Rosemary Galloway on bass and Michelle Josef on the drum kit.

Sad it may be that such a concert is necessary for the reasons that it is, but glad you will be if you go out to support the effort and also get to enjoy this awesome talent in a gala showcase setting.
