“No Show”s don’t have to mean your day lays an egg

/// I’m not sure why some bar owners decide to cancel otherwise regular live music events that fall on the day before or the day after a religious holiday like Easter, but that still happens even in our non-denominational secular bar culture. (What slays me is when stores or bars that are run by non-Christians still decide to close or cancel shows around Easter and Christmas —but that’s another story, perhaps for a different publication!)

The still fledgling Saturday Sessions acoustic open stage hosted by Brian Gladstone at Black Swan doesn’t happen today due to the holiday weekend and neither will the barely-out-of-swaddling Saturday night Rock jam started by Tommy Rocker’s Classic Rock Show just two weeks ago at Liverpool Arms in Pickering —although both bars are most certainly open for business today and probably tomorrow as well. Go figure.

In the case of the Swan event, the cancellation will quite possibly help out a couple of talented acoustic players in the west part of the city at Full Of Beans on Dundas West near Dufferin and at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles Ave.  And thanks to the timing, it’s a snap to check out both events.

Highly literate and sensitive balladeer David Storey will be at FOB and as a matter of fact he’ll be hosting a 1-4 p.m. open mic (—take that Black Swan!)  in the room at 1348 Dundas St. West in the heart of the “Little Oz” district around Dufferin-Ossington that also includes Dakota Tavern, Lula Lounge, The Garrison, The Painted Lady and The Communist’s Daughter, among others.

An hour after Storey is done, at 403 Roncesvalles Bill Heffernan does his usual Saturday 5-8 showcase that this week comes with a twist: he’s featuring his own Bill Heffernan Trio combo in the limelight. You can expect a few musical friends to be there too and no doubt one or two will do a few tunes during Bill’s breaks.

Roots aficionados who might normally gather at Black Swan will find both these events to their taste and it’s supposed to be a great day to be out and about.  -Gary 17, www.torontomoon.ca
