Tuesdays are buzzing with live music on east Danforth | TorontoMoon.ca 160705Tu | Shows for Tuesday, July 05, 2021

\ TO EAST \

Tuesday evenings on the little part of Danforth Avenue centered on the Greenwood to Woodbine strip could easily be a Friday or Saturday night anywhere else based on the amount of live music going on in the area tonight.

There are at least five live music events taking place there, some featuring more than one act and most of assuredly high calibre.

Starting at 6 and performing till 9 every Tuesday, Julian Fauth, who won the Best Blues Juno for his authentic Tin Pan Alley-style originals and about whom I’ve written many times, appears at tiny craft-brew friendly Sauce at 1376 Danforth.  There’s no cover charge and usually a good crowd of youngish local trendies both inside and on the front and rear patios of the restaurant a little east of the Greenwood subway station at Linnsmore Crescent.

From 7-9 or 10 p.m. each Tuesday there’s a live music act at tapas eatery Relish, a block east of Woodbine at 2152 Danforth, usually a songwriter —such as Michael Coughlan tonight— sharing original material.

Starting at 7:30 there’s now a new weekly live music residency at the recently opened Firkin On Danforth in the condo tower on the corner of Woodbine at 2057 Danforth.  Most weeks it will feature acoustic Pop covers soloist Matt Winkler, who kicked off the event last week.  I was very impressed with his versatility, amiability and serious guitar-playing talent and ended up staying till the show wraps at 11 —personable attention from server Kristin didn’t hurt my enjoyment either!  Since Matt says he probably can’t do every week (he’s also part of a duo —and has some fine originals, btw) there will probably be openings for other performers to do these evenings in the future.  Stay tuned!

Across the street from the Firkin, although it only happens on alternate Tuesdays, the Fingerstyle Guitar Association tonight hosts an open stage at Hirut at 2050 Danforth from 8 until interest wanes, usually around midnight.  With personable Mai-Ling Loo on hand to shepherd proceedings, the vibe is relaxed and welcoming and they even let amateurs get up, though there are usually several undeniably gifted pickers, like local composer Steve Raiken, who come out to share their tunes and socialize.

Heading back towards the Greenwood subway station, a few steps away at the corner of Linnsmore, the Tuesday night Steamwhistle Brewery-sponsored indie series at Linsmore Tavern, 1298 Danforth, is still going strong from 8 till 12 or so and tonight has a special treat.  Among the three acts on deck is a duo with songwriter Eli Martin of Sarnia indie band Marinol Nation, whom I wrote about last month.  Again there’s also no cover for this show.

Last week I also stopped into the Groove Bar a block west of Woodbine, which for a long time has offered a weekly open stage on Tuesdays, but the room had no stage set up and there was nothing going on, so it appears that event, if not kaput, is certainly not a destination room you can rely on just now.

With all the other stuff going on in the area, however, you can see why it might feel like a Friday —except, of course, that you won’t be paying cover charges at any of these places!
