Vaughan Park is Nicola Vaughan [right] and Jo-Anne Park -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

Busy Nicola Vaughan doesn’t have a lot of free time on her schedule these days, what with hosting her regular Sunday afternoon open stage at Hirut Café, Wednesday open mic at Black Swan Tavern and hosting karaoke on the weekends at another local joint.  But Tuesdays are free for her and tonight she’ll be free to see when she teams up with one of the regular guests at her other live music events, Jo-Anne Park, as part of the bill at Linsmore Tavern’s indie night series.

These two together are an absolute treat. I’ve previously described Nicola’s amazing versatility and Jo-Anne adds to that with her Chet Baker-inspired guitar accompaniments and also usually has her bass with her to fill out Nicola’s sound on other numbers.  The repertoire ranges from Country to Jazz to Beatles Pop, showtunes and a lot more and they do it all, as well as occasionally some of Nicola’s catchy original Pop tunes, with poise and a lighthearted, fun-loving demeanour.

They sound so good together that not only did I christen them with a name (Vaughan Park) but I also booked them for a couple of shows a few years ago, including one at Hirut shortly before Nicola took over the Sunday open mic I had started there a year previously.  As regular patrons know, Jo-Anne is a frequent guest there as well as at the Swan Wednesdays for the past nearly five years since Vaughan started there. (That anniversary happens May 3, btw.)

The pair go on tonight at 10 but it’ll be worth going by the club at 1298 Danforth Ave. (a few steps from Greenwood subway) a little earlier on for the no-cover three-act show that starts at 8.  At 9 p.m. is another exciting feature, the SpaceGirl Band featuring songwriter and Punk-Pop songwriter Teresa Hart.  A former member of the all-female Punk band Fidget and a regular at open mics and Blues jams for many years, Hart is versatile, dynamic and accomplished.
