Wayne Neon carries on Free Times open mic while Dr. B heals | TorontoMoon.ca 170624Sa | Shows for Saturday, June 24, 2021

Wayne Neon Smith -Malu Baumgarten

\ TO DOWNTOWN \

There’s a lot of live music that people can consume happening all over the GTA today, what with the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, North By North East and Pride celebrations all in full swing —not to mention regional and neighbourhood celebrations like the Junction Solstice Festival and others.

But for those who want to make their own music, they might want to check out Free Times Café at 320 College St. this afternoon for the new weekly open mic taking place —but no, we’re not referring to the one hosted by Brian “Dr. B” Gladstone most Saturdays from autumn through till the start of summer.

Even if he weren’t on summer hiatus right now, Brian would probably be getting someone else to guest host for the next while anyways, because he’s still recovering (fortunately quickly) from injuries sustained in a fall while visiting Thailand last month.

But a genial, versatile performer we wrote about when he hosted his first open mic in the room on a Monday earlier this year, Wayne “Neon” Smith, has now stepped in to start running a 2-5 pm “Acoustical Healing” open mic Saturdays in the cozy room with great food and decent beer prices.  As we told you back in January when he did his first Monday there, he’s well familiar with the room, since he’s also a member of the Gordon’s Acoustic Living Room troupe that performs there monthly.

I haven’t heard yet how the first one went last week but would imagine that even if it’s not super busy (more playing time for those who are there!) with all the fellow artists he knows the talent level is probably high.
