Born of a Capricorn mother, whose birthday would have been in nine days were she still on this side of the mortal plane, I am hugely appreciative of many of the fine qualities of those who entered the world under the sign of The Goat.
Tenaciously determined, sensible, and grounded in reality but with a lofty view of things, folks from this Zodiacal sign, according to astrological lore, share other positive characteristics such as being helpful and loyal. All of which traits are found in abundance in three artists of very different styles all celebrating birthdays with shows tonight.
Glen Hornblast is a Folk songwriter with a strong thread of Country running through his endearingly elemental and soulful songs with simple but substantial lyrics. Julian Taylor can perform acoustically but has become hailed across the nation for his upbeat, driving and catchy dance-Pop/Funk/R&B tunes with just a frisson of Reggae. And Al Reilly is a dyed-in-the-wool classic Rock covers artist who also writes but is best known for his takes on iconic bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones et al with his Al Reilly’s Catalyst band.
All are highly regarded within their circles and have a reliable following of fans, achieved after years of building a base and moving step-by-step up the hill towards the top. Moreover, they’ve done so in part not just by insisting on and executing performance excellence from themselves and their band members or accompanists, they’ve also each been stalwart members of their respective musical communities, organizing multi-artist shows or getting out to support other peoples’ gigs on a consistent basis for a decade or more.
Hornblast, who celebrates this afternoon 5-8 at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles Ave. with frequent accompanist and a Roots-Pop songwriter/covers solo and duos artist with a rising profile of his own, Mark Yan, has put on many showcases through his monthly Nashville Bound series, often for good causes, and has also done videography for other artists as well as supporting a variety of open stages. In addition to sets by the two headliners, specials guests/backing artists will include Al Soberman, Bob Cohen, Linda Saslove and The McDales.
Taylor, who has also had his own record company, created and, until recently, for ten years curated the weekly Riverboat Mondays open stage at Dora Keogh as well as numerous showcase events over the years promoting other artists there, and is also a frequent face in the crowd at east TO live music shows. Naturally he’ll celebrate turning 40 yesterday tonight at Dora, at 141 Danforth Ave., with a no-cover 9-12 show that’s bound to include guests.
Reilly, who turns 61 today, is a ubiquitous presence in the audience supporting fellow artists at their Rock shows across the GTA along with life partner Brenda Elaine, often travelling to Durham Region, his hometown of Brampton in Peel or to Etobicoke (where of course for the past 28 months he also hosts a weekly Monday jam at The Rockpile). Also an occasional participant at karaoke shows, he held one bash celebrating his “Sexy One” birthday with his Catalyst band in Scarborough last night, as we told you yesterday, and tonight takes his band out east to the new Drums N Flats at 60 Randall Drive, Ajax for another “Sexy One” party. I’d expect some guests here as well, since Al is always generous with his stage when fellow artists are in the room.
It’s hard not to reflect, as these fine artists all begin another voyage around the sun, on the fact that we lost so many talents last year, most of them also very fine people, as well as some dear supporters and builders of the scene. It serves to remind us that no matter the weather, we need to support one another while we can, since we never know whose number will be up next. The turning of another page by tonight’s celebrants perhaps helps us realize that we’ve got to party while we’re still hearty!
