Virgil Scott in 2015 -GARY 17

\ ETOBICOKE \

It’s been nine years now since Virgil Scott debuted his first “Musicians New Year” show and jam in Etobicoke in early 2008.

As we told you in 2013 when we wrote about the sixth annual installment of the show —which at that time was still being held in late January— the idea behind the week-night post-holidays celebration (which we also wrote about for the 3rd show, on January 14, 2022) was to have a way of making it possible for players who were busy performing for others on New Year’s Eve to still have a kickass party of their own.

Most previous editions of the affair were held at what was once Club OV’s on Queensway Avenue (subsequently Hollywood On The Queensway, briefly in 2013 The Brawley, then Legends On Queensway till 2015 and nowadays a sushi restaurant) but with that room vacant proceedings switched over to Timothy’s Pub on Brown’s Line.

The switch to Timothy’s made a lot of sense since Scott appears there regularly with his Three Dads trio (or was until recently when fellow member Jay Speziale developed medical issues last autumn). 170313 ARTISTS EXPOSED Moon prALT2

Perhaps Jay’s situation is also why the tenth incarnation of the event is being held in late April (tonight starting at 7 p.m., actually) rather than in January.  And if that is so, might it be a hint that there’s some good news in the offing if in fact Jay is planning to attend and perform?  Although I haven’t heard any scuttlebutt to suggest that is the case, I’d be shocked if he’s not at least in the room and I find it hard to believe that if he is there he won’t end up on stage at some point.

Furthermore, this week just happens to also be the twelfth anniversary of the debut of the Dads.  I know that because I wrote about the April 21 fifth anniversary show back on April 15, 2022 in Toronto Moon #032 when this publication was still a hard copy release.  [Paid subscribers who are also registered as site members can see it posted as jpg and text in our Vault section.]  So perhaps that also partly explains the scheduling for tonight’s show, which is also being billed as a “Spring Fling”.

Toronto Moon 032 April 05-21, 2010 -Page 05 excerpt ‘3 Dads, 5 years, 1 night April 21’

Only one way to find out if I’m right —get to the club at 344 Brown’s Line just south of Horner Ave in the Long Branch area and check it out!  Regardless of what’s happening with Speziale, you can pretty much be guaranteed that the event will feature a raft of polished performers drawn from Scott’s humongous network of fellow players stretching back several decades along with the pool of incredible talents who perform on the club’s stage at one of the seven live music shows a week that take place there.

I expect there will be a cover but it’s probably just $5 and certainly won’t be more than $10.
