Michael Brennan figures today is his last roundup for Graffiti’s anniversaries | TorontoMoon.ca 170702Su | Shows for Sun. July 02, 2021

Michael Brennan

Michael Brennan

\ TO CENTRAL \

It was four months ago or so that Country songwriter Michael Brennan hit the 17-years mark for his weekly Sunday 4-7 shows at tiny Graffiti’s in Kensington Market, which in June has been celebrating its own milestone of being open for 22 years now. (We told you a little about his longstanding relationship with the room last year on the occasion of his 16th anniversary there.)

But Brennan says in a Facebook posting that today’s is probably the last anniversary he’ll celebrate here, since at some during the next year he’s planning to finally return permanently to from where he hails in Nova Scotia.

It reminds us of how, as we reported seven years ago this past March, [and as registered subscribers can read in the Vault section of our website] in March of 2010 he flew home early from a visit to his native province —where he was doing a showcase at the East Coast Country Music Awards, for which he’d been nominated for his 2009 album Anywhere But Here— just to attend the celebration at the TO club.  We noted the irony of how his life in TO since moving here in 1997 has been far from what was depicted in the disc’s title track, since he obviously valued his relationship with the little room at 170 Baldwin St. enough to make attending the anniversary here a priority over schmoozing with industry types and reconnecting with family and old friends.

Graffiti’s is that kind of a place, the sort of room where once you’re there it’s not easy leaving, and where you can’t help but meet fellow patrons because you’re bound to bump into them at some point on the way to the bar or the bathroom, so people do get to know your name.

For me it also has a special place in the heart and memory as one of our early advertisers in the to-nite magazine that was this e-publication’s forerunner.  Brennan obviously concurs and the room returns the sentiment:  he was their choice to host the 19th anniversary celebrations three years ago, as we told you then.

As always with shows at little Graffiti’s you’ll want to arrive early if you possibly can, though the front window behind the stage should be open if the weather stays nice, so if you have to wait outside for a while you’ll still be well entertained.
