David Storey -Gary 17

\ TO EAST \

It’s been barely a year since poignant Roots songwriter David Storey released his long-awaited debut full-length album with a title, Comin’ Home, that now seems a little ironic, given that he’s about to make an 8-months or so excursion to B.C. to work on a project in another discipline.

It would seem that Storey is yet again getting ready to reinvent himself —at least a little bit.  On Sept. 21 he’ll be leaving the GTA, to which he returned along with rediscovering his musical roots just a few years ago —which is of course the subtext of the album title— after working many years in television and film.

That Storey should yet again pursue new directions perhaps should not be so surprising, considering that the inevitability of change has been a thread in many of his most powerful ballads.  Even the title of his debut 5-song ep from 2012, shortly after he got back into songwriting, speaks to that: Movin’ On, it’s called.

As I wrote last year, many of the tunes from both discs, from the bittersweet “We Are The Greatest” —with its nostalgic yearning for a simpler time before the ravages of a friend’s disease— to “Last Loon On The Lake” —in which one faces the prospect of being left alone after one’s friends and loved ones have all had to take wing— heighten our awareness of the impermanence of all things.

Quite possibly the co-creator, co-writer and main director of “Corner Gas” the series and director/co-producer of its offshoot movie is being co-opted back into the world of the silver screen or perhaps completely different creative directions beckon.

But after seeing first-hand the passion and soul he brings to performance (and the recording) of his wry, often wistful and basically simple but always lyrically penetrating tunes, it seems unlikely to me that Storey will be giving up his musical pursuits entirely during his foray west to work on “something going on out there” that’s been in the hopper for a while.

But whatever the reason for the sojourn, tonight Storey is holding a bon voyage gig in a room where he’s a perfect fit.  Relish Tapas Bar at 2052 Danforth Ave. has a dedicated stage with house backline and seems designed for songwriters and small bands to shine; the one tiny tv at the bar never has the sound on and often just broadcasts the aquarium channel.  The food is truly awesomely creative and delish and acoustics are good, while audiences are attentive and appreciative.

That’s bound to be especially the case there tonight for Storey’s show scheduled for 9-11 but likely to start later (since there’s an opening act at 7) and bound to run much later since he’s announced he’ll have a band with him for two full sets and has arranged to have a between-sets act as well.

He’ll be accompanied by Howard Rabkin, Bob Cohen and Henry Lees for his performances and the guest act is showcase worthy in its own right: master guitar pickers Brian Gladstone and Tony Quarrington are teamed up as their Amazing Flying Fingers duo.

There’s no cover but there is a donations jug and I would expect that Storey will have copies of the album and ep on hand —if you don’t already own them this might be your last opportunity for a while to get one direct and signed.
