Fats pals sing Songs of Sam tonight to support Larkin cd

/// It’s always a shame when treasured friends die before their time but at least when the departed one is a songwriter there’s the consolation of knowing that their music can live on, both via being performed by other artists and through the magic of recording technology. Friends of hugely loved songsmith Sam Larkin, who passed away in October, will be gathering tonight to do a show to ensure his legacy is preserved by performing some of his tunes to help an online fundraiser to complete a second album of his original material.

A lot of his songs were first shared with fellow artists at the Fat Albert’s Coffee House open stage that happens every Wednesday Sept. through June. Larkin was a staple of these gatherings that often over the past 30 years have included iconic talents such as pianoman and recording whiz Bobby Wiseman, who was working with Larkin on the followup recording to his critically acclaimed debut album Ransom. Among those who regularly go to Fats these days are artists such as Brian Jantzi and Zoe Henderson, who often put on shows at which they cover tunes by other local songwriters. They’ll be on hand to do Sam songs, along with Wiseman and many more players, for the 9 p.m. pay-what-you-can Friends of Fats sing Songs Of Sams show at C’est What at the corner of Church and Front Streets downtown.  -Gary 17, www.torontomoon.ca
