Frankie C of Monster Beach in 2008 -GARY 17

Frankie C of Monster Beach in 2008 -GARY 17

\ TO WEST \

It’s been a long, long time since I last wrote about Pop Rock songwriter Frankie C and his Monster Beach band that, as I expressed it in 2008 in Issue #415 of to-nite, “make[s] it sound like 60s radio never died!”

It’s been so long since I last heard this outfit, which is (or was then at least) basically Frank plus bassist Chris Chown and whichever drummer they happened to be working with at the time, that I’ve pretty much forgotten all the song titles of some of the tunes that I really liked.

You can’t really find anything online, either, because for some reason Frank has always insisted on keeping a super-low profile, exemplified in how he uses only an initial for his secret last name. (I used to know his actual name but it’s been too long to recollect and sadly my indexing of materials from that time is far from perfect.)

The intentional obscurity perhaps also explains why, to my knowledge, Frank has never recorded an album.  That’s a real shame, because his material is not only radio-friendly, it bears repeated listenings.

Unless something has changed drastically in the last decade or so, however [and assuming that the group listed on the schedule is actually even the same one I’m familiar with!] I can heartily recommend this group’s set tonight at The Piston to anyone who likes high-energy, thoughtfully crafted Rock/Pop tunes.

They’ll be appearing in the room at 937 Bloor St. W. a few doors down from the Long & McQuade store just west of Ossington, as part of a three-act indie showcase that also includes another band whose tunes have always impressed me: Mercy Flight fronted by super-versatile multi-instrumentalist Steve York.

The other feature for the weekly 8-12 Indie Tuesdays showcase is another talented songwriter, Angela Saini.  There’s no cover if you arrive by 9:30 and after that it’s $5.
